Overview
The British Association for Japanese Studies (BAJS) is pleased to announce a new studentship to support the completion of a PhD in Japanese Studies and the opportunity to serve as Managing Editor for Japan Forum, the official journal of BAJS. Japan Forum is ranked 'A' out of more than 20,000 academic journals by the Australian Research Council (For more information:

For the period 2011 to 2014 the successful applicant will be based in the National Institute of Japanese Studies (NIJS) at the White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC). NIJS and WREAC are collaborative endeavours between the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Department of East Asian Studies, School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Leeds, or the School of East Asian Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Sheffield.
This represents an excellent opportunity not only to complete a PhD but also to learn how academic publishing works, liaise with some of the leading scholars in the field of Japanese Studies and follow the latest trends in the field.
Application procedure:
1) Applications should be made to either the University of Leeds or the University of Sheffield. 3) In the application, applicants should flag the fact that they wish to be considered for the Japan Forum PhD Studentship and include a statement outlining their reasons for applying and suitability.
4) Existing PhD students should send a statement outlining their reasons for applying and their suitability directly to Professor Hugo Dobson (H.Dobson@sheffield.ac.uk)
5) The successful applicant will be notified in writing in June 2011, and must accept by the end of August. Depending on whether the successful applicant accepts the studentship, a reserve applicant will be informed of his/her success or otherwise by mid-September 2011.
Studentship conditions:
1) The studentship is open to postgraduate research students of all nationalities. Both prospective and registered students are welcome to apply.
2) Candidates may apply in any field of Japanese Studies, dependent on the availability of an appropriate supervisor at NIJS/WREAC. It will normally be expected that you will use Japanese language materials in your research.
3) The successful candidate will also be appointed as Managing Editor of the official BAJS journal Japan Forum, published by Taylor and Francis. S/he will be required to assist with the production of four issues per year in line with the publisher’s schedule. To this end, the successful applicant will be required to dedicate one day per week (or equivalent) to various editorial duties (including liaising with the editors, the international editorial board, authors and the publisher).
4) Editorial and/or managerial experience is desirable. The successful applicant will be required to undertake any training deemed to be appropriate to the successful execution of editorial duties related to Japan Forum.
5) The amount of the scholarship is £10,000 per annum, will commence from 26 September 2011 and is renewable for up to three years, dependent on acceptable performance of the Managing Editor’s duties and successful progress in the doctoral programme. The scholarship must be used to contribute towards fees and/or maintenance. The successful applicant will be paid quarterly through the BAJS Secretariat.
6) BAJS Council will approve the final award of the scholarship. Continued award of the scholarship after the first year will be subject to the approval of the editors of Japan Forum and BAJS Council.
7) You will not be eligible to receive an award if you accept full scholarships from the AHRC, ESRC, or any other funding body (UK or overseas). The successful candidate will not be eligible for the BAJS Postgraduate Studentship.
8) The successful applicant will be expected to acknowledge the support of BAJS in their dissertations, presentations, and any subsequent publications.
