Overview
The Alan Pearsall Bequest and the Institute of Historical Research will offer a one year postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Naval and Maritime History for the session 2011–12, tenable at the Institute. The Fellowship stipend will be £22,000 for the full session. It will be payable in four quarterly instalments through the Institute. Candidates who are not British nationals may require a visa, and, if so, must ascertain what category of visa is most suitable for them. The University of London is licensed to issue sponsorship certificates for Tier 5 visas. If Fellows need to enter the UK under a Tier 5 visa, they should apply for a sponsorship certificate through the IHR Fellowship Office, which they can then use in their visa application to the Home Office. Further details of visa categories can be found at http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visitingtheuk/
The Fellowship will be awarded to a graduate who expects to have submitted their doctoral thesis in Naval and Maritime History (broadly defined) by 1 October 2011. It is a strict condition of the Fellowship that the thesis should have been submitted by that date. Applications are encouraged for work on any aspect of Naval and Maritime History, in the broadest sense, anywhere in the world, from the fall of the Roman Empire in the West up to the present day. Applicants may be of any nationality, and their PhD (or equivalent) may have been awarded in any country. Those who have previously held another postdoctoral research fellowship are not eligible. The Fellowship may not be held in conjunction with any other maintenance award, nor can it be deferred until a future academic session.
Fellows will not be required to be resident in London, but should participate in the activities of the Institute, by regular attendance at and presentation of papers to appropriate seminars and by giving information and help to fellow scholars working in the same field. At the discretion of the Director of the Institute, the Fellow may engage in teaching or other paid work for up to six hours a week (note however that some categories of non-national may need to obtain a work permit in order to undertake this). The Fellow will also be required to submit a brief report to the Director of the Institute on their achievements while holding the Fellowship and subsequent progress of their career one year after the end of the Fellowship (i.e. in October 2013).
Applications must be made on the prescribed form, which may be obtained by writing to the Fellowship Office at the Institute at the address below, or emailing James.Lees@sas.ac.uk. The form may also be downloaded from the Institute’s website at http://www.history.ac.uk/. Applications must be accompanied by a summary of the thesis (of up to 750 words), a one-page CV, and a statement of proposed research (up to 1,000 words) during a year as a postdoctoral Fellow. Candidates placed on the final short list will be required to attend an interview at the Institute, prior to which they will be invited to submit a piece of work, in English, of up to 8,000 words. Interviews are likely to be held during June/July 2011
Please send five collated copies of the application form and supporting documents (including the originals) and one set of confidential references. Applications must reach the Fellowship Office, Institute of Historical Research, University of London, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU, not later than 15 April 2011.
Candidates should send copies of the accompanying `Letter for Referees' to two referees immediately, and ensure that their confidential references, in sealed envelopes, are returned to them to be included with their application.
