Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens, or have permanent residency and must be residing in New Zealand at the time of applying. Australians who reside in New Zealand and have completed (or are about to complete) their undergraduate degree at a New Zealand university are also eligible.
The fields of study at Cambridge University must be in pure or applied science. Successful applicants will receive an annual living allowance (set by the CCT), annual return airfares between New Zealand and UK, and will have their course and college fees paid.
Please note that applicants will be responsible for all other costs (including costs of travel to interview or videoconference costs for shortlisted applicants), visa costs, and tourism or travel other than to-and-from Cambridge.
The application must represent the applicant’s first attempt at study towards a PhD, and the applicant must be in a position that they would be able to enter the United Kingdom and comply with the regulations for matriculation at Cambridge University, if successful.
Applicants are encouraged to look into the process of applying for admission to a college at Cambridge. Although it is unlikely a Rutherford Scholar would be denied admission, the process is not automatic, and so short-listed applicants will be required to complete such admission applications by the due date in December of the year before study.
Awardees may also be required to apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate depending on the proposed area of study. Administrative support will be provided by the Rutherford Foundation to awardees to ensure these additional applications run smoothly.
Application forms must be both posted (one hard copy, signed) and an identical copy e-mailed.
In addition to a complete and accurate application form, candidates must supply (by e-mail or post):
- Proof of eligibility (e.g. copy of birth certificate, passport or permanent resident’s permit);
- Current academic transcript; and,
- Proof of residency in New Zealand for those born in Australia.
Applicants must contact those named as the academic referees, or character referee, who have been asked to attest to the candidate’s suitability for this award, and provide them with the referee form (appended to the application form – this may be cut and pasted into a new document).
Applications close on 1st August 2011.

Selection criteria
Selection is based on the demonstration of academic excellence, evidence of engagement with science and technology, and commitment to New Zealand. On the basis of the provided material, the Selection Panel will construct a short-list of applicants to be invited for interview in Wellington. If travel to Wellington would cause demonstrable hardship to the short-listed applicant, a request can be made to participate through video or telephone conference. Successful applicants will be notified in October. However, to take up the award the candidate must fulfil any academic conditions, including being accepted for admission to a Cambridge college.
Value
Rutherford Scholars receive an allowance of sterling £11,000* for each year, up to a maximum of three, that they are enrolled for study towards their PhD at Cambridge, in addition to university and college fees. Each year they receive an allowance, scholars will be provided with one, non-transferable, return airfare between the UK and New Zealand. [*This is an indicative amount, as the allowance is set annually by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust to cover annual living expenses while at Cambridge.]
