PhD fellowship in Molecular Biology, University of Antwerp

Overview

In the context of an interdisciplinary systems-biology research project on the regulation of leaf growth in Arabidopsis thaliana, the following positions are available within the departments of Biology and Mathematics/Informatics of the University of Antwerp:

1 PhD fellowship in Molecular Biology

The research aims to build a mechanistic understanding of the regulation of leaf growth in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. In the experimental groups the work focuses on the growth regulator auxin and its interaction with the growth processes cell division and expansion. This work is supported by the development of computer simulation models in the mathematical groups, in which experimental treatments are simulated to make predictions that can be verified experimentally. The combination of experimental and computational expertise will lead to a greater depth of our understanding of the regulation of growth regulation in plants.

Job description:

· You perform molecular and cell biological research towards obtaining a PhD on the topic of the regulation of cell expansion during the development of Arabidopsis leaves. The project is conducted within the experimental research group “Plant Growth and Development” (webh01.ua.ac.be/fymo).

· You participate in the teaching and research support within the department of Biology. This entails limited involvement in the practical courses and the guidance of BSc and MSc projects.

· You apply for external funding in the context of this research project.

Profile:

· Candidates need to have completed a Master studies in Biology, Bio-engineering or Biochemistry, with a specialization in cell or molecular biology and have experience with plant research.

· A good understanding of mathematics and informatics is an advantage.

· Your teaching and research qualities are in line with the requirements of the University of Antwerp

· You are prepared to conduct your work in the context of a multidisciplinary team.
