UK: Global Changemakers Global Youth Summit

Overview

Global Changemakers is a British Council funded global youth network of social entrepreneurs and community activists from 113 countries worldwide. It seeks applications from social entrepreneurs, community activists and volunteers aged 16 to 19 to attend week long training sessions and workshops in the UK. Its mission is to empower youth to catalyse positive social change, something which it achieves through:

1. Learning & Teaching: Global and regional summits, community and personal capacity building supported by free online curriculum
2. Doing: Individual and group projects address key global issues and facilitate joint working and create shared values: currently supporting 112 projects in 65 countries
3. Advocacy: the Global Changemakers community is represented at high-level events and disseminates best practices in youth-led development

What is the purpose of the Global Youth Summit?

The Global Youth Summit will select and bring together 60 young social entrepreneurs, community activists and volunteers from around the world for a five-day summit which will:

- Improve participants’ knowledge, insight, and exposure to key economic, political, and
social issues globally
- Improve participants’ ability to design and deliver projects by giving them the concrete tools and skills they need to amplify their work
- Support intercultural dialogue among young people from around the world
- Serve as a platform to exchange knowledge, ideas and best practices of what works most effectively in global and local contexts
- Grow and sustain the network of Global Changemakers

Who will be selected?

Candidates should:
- Be aged 16-19 on November 13, 2011
- Have a proven track record of social entrepreneurship, community activism or volunteer work
- Possess good spoken command of English

Typically, 1500 applications are received for the 60 available spaces.

How will participants be selected?

On 4 July 2011, an online call for applications will go out on www.global-changemakers.net asking social entrepreneurs, community activists and volunteers from around the world aged 16-19 to submit a written application and 2-minute YouTube video detailing their track record in community work and how they plan to contribute to the network activity and wider impact if selected. Together with local staff and Global Changemakers from previous summits the applications will be evaluated and, considering the quality of the applications as well as geographic, thematic and gender balance, 60 candidates will be invited to attend the summit and join the Global Changemakers network.

Costs

The Global Changemakers programme covers participation fees (including travel, accommodation, visa costs etc.) for all selected participants.

What is the format and timing for the event?

The event will take place on 13-19 November and will consist of five full days of training, workshops and capacity building with experts and facilitators, as well as visits to local community projects. Global Changemakers alumni will function as peer facilitators.

What are the intended outcomes?

During the summit, participants will work in issues-based groups (e.g. environment and climate change, social entrepreneurship, education, human rights) to develop plans for joint and individual projects aimed at addressing these issues and raising awareness about them. In addition, the participants brought into the network at the Global Youth Summit become eligible to apply for individual grant funding and support. They will also join existing workgroups collecting knowledge, ideas and best practices and share their ideas and experience with the wider Global Changemakers community.

Application can be made here.
