Overview
The Department of Environmental Science is looking for a Junior Researcher to be employed within the context of a Long-Term Fellowship provided by the Marie Curie Initial Training Network on Environmental ChemOinformatics ( www.eco-itn.eu). You will extend an existing accumulation model (OMEGA) to include new generations of chemicals, using information on the kinetics of related biotic and xenobiotic substances.
Uptake, distribution and elimination will be modelled as a function of chemical descriptors (e.g., polarity, size, structure) to estimate internal concentrations. Links to other factors determining internal concentration, such as dissociation and biotransformation/ degradation will be established. The new relationships derived will be applied to independent toxicity data to tune and test the model. The approach integrates sites of accumulation with modes of action, biotic compounds with xenobiotic compounds, and mechanistic underpinning with empirical validation for different routes of exposure.
Requirements
You are expected to hold a Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, environmental science or a related field and should be able to translate physiological knowledge on uptake and distribution of biotic/xenobiotic compounds into simple accumulation equations.
Organization Background
Radboud University Nijmegen, strategically located in Europe, is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. A place with a personal touch, where top-flight education and research take place on a beautiful leafy campus in modern buildings with state-of-art facilities. The Department of Environmental Science, embedded in the Institute for Water and Wetland Research of the Faculty of Science, focuses on the impact of multiple stressors on ecosystems and human health.
