Overview
Two full-time PhD scholarships are available in Biological Sciences at Macquarie University associated with ARC Discovery Project 1095200; one is a MQRES scholarship and the other ARC funded.
Please quote the allocation reference number 2010093 on your application form.
Project Name: Is Biodiversity necessary for Ecosystems to function?
Project Description: The idea that biodiverse systems provide greater levels of ecosystem functions is central to current strategies for conservation and environmental management. This project will expand on current research in this area and test this important ecological concept, focussing on how diversity across multiple trophic levels affects ecosystem function.
Groundwater ecosystems provide a simple model ecosystem for this research. They have a simple trophic structure that allows all trophic levels to be examined, and a unique, largely undescribed fauna, housing the potential for novel biological discoveries.
The project will involve field sampling across NSW and laboratory work, combining molecular fingerprinting, functional gene analysis, molecular-based taxonomy and phylogenetic analyses to quantify ecosystem function, and assess diversity across all trophic levels from microbes to macroinvertebrates. Diversity will be assessed across a range of groundwater ecosystems and related to both environmental conditions and ecosystem function.
This project is a collaboration between Macquarie University, UTS and the University of Cologne, Germany.
In addition to a First Class Honors degree (or equivalent), applicants should have a drivers licence and experience in any of molecular analysis, microbial ecology, invertebrate ecology or groundwater studies.
Eligible Candidates
Prospective applicants should, in the first instance, submit a cover letter detailing relevant experience, a CV and an academic transcript to the principal supervisor: Dr Grant Hose, email: grant.hose@mq.edu.au telephone: +61 2 9850-6296
Stipend awarded
The 2010 MQRES full-time stipend rate is $22,500 pa tax exempt for 3.5 years.
How to apply
Applicants will need to complete a candidature/scholarship application form and arrange for two academic referee reports to be submitted to the Higher Degree Research Office. Refer to: http://www.hdr.mq.edu.au/information_about/applications for further application instructions. Macquarie University will advise the successful applicant of entitlements at the time of scholarship offer. Please quote the allocation number on your application.
