Scholarization: Information for International Postgraduate (PhD) Applicants
The Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Postgraduate Awards provide full financial support for international student for a maximum of three and a half (3.5) years to undertake a postgraduate qualification at PhD level by research in any field of study in Australia. Award holders will be encouraged to undertake a work placement or internship in Australia of up to 12 months related to their fields of study at the completion of their study program.
The top twenty (20) eligible incoming PhD recipients of Endeavour Postgraduate Awards will be awarded the Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Postgraduate Awards. International applicants should not contact their Australian host university regarding these Awards; instead they undertake the normal application process for the 2011 Endeavour Postgraduate Awards.
Target Candidates
Citizens of India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, Singapore, The People’s Republic of China (including Hong Kong, and Macau SARs), Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam will be eligible for this Award.
Award Benefits
Funding Amount: ($AUD)
Travel Allowance: 4,500
Establishment Allowance: 4,000
Monthly Stipend: 2,500 per month
Tuition fees per semester (for up to 3 years): Up to 12,500 per semester/trimester
Additional PM’s Award stipend: 10,000 per year
Internship Allocation: 5,000
Total Award Value: Up to 237,400
Internship
A unique aspect of this award is the opportunity for Award Holders to also undertake an internship. This provides them with a broader opportunity to also gain work-related knowledge and skills in an international setting.
For the purposes of the Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Awards an internship is defined as any paid or unpaid work related to the Award Holders field of study undertaken outside of their host institution and/or specific research or study group.
The internship is for a maximum of 12 months (minimum of 2 months) in duration and can be with one or more employers. Applicants are not required to have an internship confirmed at the time of application and it
is not part of the selection criteria. Award Holder’s host institution may assist them in finding a suitable internship to be undertaken once they have completed their study.

The eligibility requirements and the application process for the Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Postgraduate Awards are the same as for the 2011 Endeavour Postgraduate Awards. Please see the 2011 Endeavour Awards Applicant Guidelines located on the Endeavour Awards website at www.endeavour.deewr.gov.au. Applicants do not have to acknowledge that they want to be considered for a Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Postgraduate Award, the top twenty (20) eligible applicants from the Endeavour Postgraduate Awards will be offered the Award and its additional benefits.
Applications for the Endeavour Postgraduate Awards for international applicants will open on 5 April 2010 and will close at 11.59pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) on 31 July 2010. International applicants must apply online via the Endeavour Awards website https://endeavouradmin.deewr.gov.au/ES/ESApplication/Security/Login.aspx.
Assessment of Applications
All applications from international applicants will be checked by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to determine whether they meet the eligibility requirements. Applications that meet the requirements will be referred to independent selection panels for consideration and ranked against the selection criteria. DEEWR may short list applications against the selection criteria prior to assessment by the selection panels.
Successful applicants will be notified by DEEWR by November 2010.
