South Africa: Professional Development Programme for Doctoral students and postdoctoral research fellows in the fields of Science Engineering and Tech

Overview

This is an open call for South African Science Councils and National Facilities to participate in the training of Doctoral students and postdoctoral research fellows in the fields of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) under the Professional Development Programme.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the National Research Foundation (NRF) are introducing the Professional Development Programme (PDP) aimed at training South African Doctoral students and Postdoctoral Research Fellows. In this programme, the student or fellow must be based at the Science Council or National Facility. The PDP is part of a suite of DST-NRF human capital development funding instruments aimed at increasing the number of skilled personnel in science, engineering and technology.

The objectives are to:

• leverage research and innovation in Science Councils and National Facilities;
• enable PhD students and recently-qualified Doctoral graduates to strengthen their skills and capabilities and consequently improve their prospects of employment in the science and technology environment;

• attract and retain young scientists and professionals of the highest calibre;
All interested South African Science Councils and National Facilities are invited to indicate their research priorities and supervisory capacity by completing the attached form and return it to Mr Envor Moeng at envor@nrf.ac.za on or before 15 May 2010.

Please note:

1. This is not a funding call for full research proposals, and no funding will be provided in response to information submitted.
2. The host institution may submit up to five (5) targeted research areas for which students and postdoctoral research fellows are sought.
3. Once the research areas have been identified, a call for applications will be opened.
