Overview
The UHI Centre for History is part of the UHI Millennium Institute, the prospective University of the Highlands and Islands. The Centre is offering a 3.5 year PhD Research Studentship in the area of Scottish History, with preference for a particular focus in the following areas:
• Climate and weather (16th-18th century)
• Migration and emigration
• Medieval military history
• Women and Gender
• Scots in Empire
• The Highlands and Islands
Value of this studentship
The Centre for History will award the UHI Research Studentship beginning in or around June 2010. This sum, of £13,290 per annum, will be paid to the successful candidate as a maintenance award, in addition to full payment of tuition fees. It will be awarded, subject to satisfactory progress, for a period of three and a half years. The award holder will be expected to undertake an element of teaching and administrative work as a condition of her/his award and will be based at the UHI Centre for History in Dornoch.
Eligible Candidates
Applicants for the studentship should hold or be expecting a First Class degree award, and/or a Distinction in a related postgraduate Masters degree, although those applying who hold a good 2:1 in their first degree will be considered on merit. Applications, including a covering letter with details of any teaching experience, full CV with the names of two referees, examples of candidate’s written work not exceeding 3,000 words (e.g. undergraduate or Masters essay) and a 1,000-2,000 word statement outlining a research proposal, must be submitted by 15 May 2010.
