UK: PhD Studentship in Design Innovation in the Built Environment, University of Reading

Overview

Applications are invited for three PhD studentships within the Design Innovation Research Centre, a new exploration group within the School of Construction Management and Engineering at the University of Reading. The Centre has a vision of a new mode of design in the digital economy and is funded through a prestigious EPSRC 'Challenging Engineering' grant.

The studentships cover all fees and an annual stipend of between £12.5-£15k for UK residents who meet funding requirements.

Applicants should have a good Bachelors or Masters degree in engineering management; information systems; sociology; organization studies; design studies or another built environment-related subject, such as planning, architecture or construction management.

Successful applicants will benefit from being part of the growing team. PhD studentship 1 and 2 contribute to developing an international repository of best-practice. PhD studentship 3 contributes to developing novel engineering solutions for shared design inquiry. All PhD students are required to learn skills for shared work, participating in the wider intellectual life of the Centre as well as making an individual contribution:

•PhD studentship 3 focuses on visualizing digital models in processes that bring design and construction experts together to discuss safety on site. The student will be supervised by Dr Whyte and work in a team with two post-doctoral researchers, who are working on an Institute of Operational Safety and Health (IOSH) funded project on 'building safely by design'. The studentship will involve engineering research to explore the potential of 4D technologies to simulate site operations in the late design stage. The student may have a background in computer science or construction management.

Eligible Candidates

To meet the funding requirements, applicants must 1) have settled status in the UK, 2) have been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the grant; and 3) not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education (3 does not apply to UK or EU nationals). Tuition fees only are available for EU applicants.

The closing date for applications is April 30th 2010, but applications will be considered on an ongoing basis so early application is advised.

Applications should include a 1000 word proposal describing how the applicant would take forward their proposed research in one of the above studentship areas.

How to apply

To apply, please submit an application form online http://www.rdg.ac.uk/Study/apply/pg-applicationform.asp with the proposal and a covering letter. When completing the application form, please write 'SCME DIRC Studentship (1, 2 or 3) - Whyte' in the text box in 'Section 10 - Funding'.
