USA: For Bangladesh - Fulbright Science and Technology, Ph.D Program 2011

Overview

The American Center of the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka is pleased to announce, for the fifth year, the competition for the International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for outstanding foreign students, starting fall 2011. This is a worldwide program providing full funding for Ph.D study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering. This year, approximately 45 awards will be given out worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields. The award is designed to be among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology. Eligible fields of study include:

Aeronautics and aeronautics and astronomics/aeronautical engineering
Agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only)
Astronomy/planetary sciences
Biology
Biomedical engineering
Chemistry
Computer sciences/engineering
Energy
Engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum)
Environmental science/engineering
Geology/earth and atmospheric sciences
Information sciences and systems (engineering focus only)
Materials science/engineering
Mathematics
Neurosciences
Oceanography
Public health (theoretical research focus only)
Physics

Eligible Candidates

In order to be eligible, applicants must be citizens of Bangladesh and residing in the country at the time of application. They must have completed at least a four year bachelor’s degree in their respective fields. Students who are already enrolled in a bachelor’s or a master’s program at a U.S. university are not eligible for this award. Similarly, candidates having a U.S. degree will not be eligible for this award. Applicants should have outstanding academic records in all secondary and post-secondary examinations.


Candidates will need to take the TOEFL iBT and GRE general test. They must have a TOEFL iBT score of 100 or higher. The applicants are expected to achieve a quantitative score of at least 700 in the GRE general test. Applicants applying in the field of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Biochemistry and Cell and Molecular Biology will need to take the GRE subject test as well. All standardized tests must be completed by July 15, 2010. Prospective candidates who have valid TOEFL or GRE scores need not take the tests again. Candidates having required test scores will be in an advantageous position. Please note that standardized test fees for the nominated candidates only will be borne by the U.S. government. Interested candidates are strongly advised to prepare in advance for GRE and TOEFL as short-listed candidates will be given a very short window to take the tests.

How to apply

Applicants are requested to submit the on-line application by Sunday, May 2. The candidates will access the online application at https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/international/. A copy of this announcement is also available at the following link:

Applicants are also requested to submit official academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution (bachelors and masters), attested copies of certificates, supplemental forms (which includes three Letters of Reference, the Academic Records Information Form and the Signature form) to the American Center, House No. 110, Road No. 27, Banani – Dhaka 1213 by the same deadline. Supplemental forms are available at the link listed above. After review of applications, only short-listed candidates will be called for an interview. Two principal and one alternate candidate will be nominated for the scholarship. Final selection will be made by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in Washington. All candidates will be notified of their status by October 15, 2010.

Benefits

All grantees will receive tuition, a monthly stipend, health and accident insurance coverage, a book and equipment allowance, research allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities. They will also be eligible to apply for additional research funding. Grantees will receive J-1 visa sponsorship under the Fulbright Student Program for up to five years. Grantees that are not able to secure an entry visa in accordance with their program start date may lose their fellowships.
