Overview
The Department of International Culture and Communication Studies invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship focusing on undocumented Latin American and/or Caribbean migration with a human rights perspective.
Migration is a global phenomenon often interpreted as the circulation of individuals from one national territory to another in compliance with the rule of law. Actual reality, however, is much more complex, particularly in border regions that separate - and unite - third and first world countries. Southern US and northern Mexico constitute such a border region, as does Mexico's southern border due to the massive influx of Central American immigrants heading for the US. The Mexican Gulf also constitutes such a border zone. There has been an increasing focus in the mass media on migration, especially undocumented immigration, often seen as a threat to national security. Migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean, and in particular undocumented ones, are often victims of human rights violations.
Against this background, we call for proposals for research projects the aim of which is to study relations between human rights and migration. An example of such a perspective could be the situation of (mainly undocumented) Central American, Mexican and/or Caribbean migrants with particular focus on border regions. The practice and discourse of 'national security' and 'securitization' could be part of the project's scope. The role and actions of civil society can also be focus points.
For the scholarship, the department will give priority to applicants who demonstrate competencies within empirical as well as theoretical studies, and who show an interest in joining the department's research environment.
With the purpose of reducing the complexity of globalisation for business people, companies, and organisations the Department of International Culture and Communication Studies (IKK) conducts interdisciplinary research in social, linguistic, and communicative problems as reflected in international collaboration. Based on business humanities and the social sciences IKK applies these theories to problems related to economic, legal, social, and cultural issues. IKK focuses on the synergy between research and teaching and produces reflective and independent candidates through a cross disciplinary and practice related approach.
The Center for the Study of the Americas, embedded in IKK, fosters studies of the Americas that are relevant to business, government agencies, organizations and the media. Research is based upon integrated multidisciplinary and transnational approaches to the American continents, and has an empirical as well as a theoretical character. The Center seeks to establish research partnerships within Copenhagen Business School and across Denmark and at the same time create long-term collaborative relationships with researchers in other European countries and the Americas.
The scholarship is part of a collaborative effort between the Center for the Study of the Americas and the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR). The PhD student will be attached to the Center for the Study of the Americas where the main supervisor is also located. Secondary supervision will made available by the DIHR.
The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) is an independent, national human rights institution modelled in accordance with the UN Paris Principles. The Institute, which was established by statute in 2002, carries on the mandate vested in the Danish Centre for Human Rights in 1987. This encompasses research, education and the implementation of national and international programmes. The Institute is part of the Danish Centre for International Studies and Human Rights (DCISM), which also includes a sister institute, the Danish Institute of International Studies (DIIS).
