USA: For Ugandan Citizens - 2011 Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program

Overview

The United States Mission is now accepting applications for the 2011 Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program. This program will award grants to Ugandan university lecturers to pursue an advanced degree, non-degree, or research program in the United States. The Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program is designed primarily to strengthen African universities through higher degree training. Although core exchanges are with universities, candidates who are affiliated with other educational, cultural, or professional institutions may apply.

Eligibility Requirements

Successful applicants for the Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program must meet all of the following criteria:

--Be citizens of Uganda,
--Have a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience at a university or comparable
institution of higher learning and be committed to work at an educational institution in
Uganda upon completion of the designated program.
--Possess at least a Bachelor's Degree,
--Be fluent in English,
--Have outstanding academic records, references and preparation in their chosen field,
--Have satisfactory required test scores (GRE, TOEFL, GMAT etc.), and
--Have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program within a
specific time-frame and returning home immediately after the approved program.
--Applications must detail the applicant’s specific area of intended academic emphasis
within the broader discipline.
--Applicants seeking to pursue a Ph.D. must detail their intended research area and be
prepared to submit a writing sample.

Application/Selection Process

All applications must be submitted using the on-line application forms at

Copies of certificates and transcripts should be delivered directly to the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Mission, Ggaba Rd., Nsambya.

Applications must be submitted no later than May 7, 2010. All applications are reviewed by a local selection panel. Final nominations are reviewed in the United States by independent review committees. Final selection of awardees is made by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. While applicants can specify where they would like to study in the U.S., ultimate institutional placement for successful candidates will be made by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Awards and university placement will be announced in Spring 2011 for programs beginning in Autumn 2010. Pre-academic programs focusing on information technology for research purposes may begin in early Summer 2011. Final nominees will be required to take the TOEFL, GRE and/or GMAT tests after screening and interviews. We do not require test scores at the initial application stage.

Grant Provisions

The Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program provides:

• Round-trip economy international travel and excess-baggage allowance.
• An allowance for settling in.
• A pre-academic orientation program.
• A monthly maintenance allowance and funding for books
• Tuition and university fees.
• Limited accident and sickness insurance.
• Academic training.
