Overview
The Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric) at the
Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) invites applications for a doctoral fellowship in international environment and development studies with a focus on the following thematic area from candidates with a research-based Master's degree and a GPA of B or above in development studies, international environmental studies or other relevant fields. Proficiency in English as a working language is a prerequisite. Research and/or working experience in developing countries will be considered an additional qualification.

Program Description
Research would address processes related to formalising local people's rights to land and natural resources in a global context of increasing pressure on land with new investments in commercial agriculture and/or large-scale land acquisitions in developing countries. The focus would be on impacts of these processes on local livelihoods and power dynamics and emerging structural changes. Preference will be given to qualified candidates with research interest in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The selected candidate will be appointed as a doctoral research fellow starting on level 45 of the Norwegian state salary scale (NOK 355.600 per annum) for a period of four years of which 25 percent (1 year) will be used for obligatory academic work for the department. Total funding available for fieldwork, books, seminars etc is NOK 66.000. The selected candidate is expected to take up the position in August/September 2010
The application must include the applicant's complete CV with certified copies of relevant transcripts and a draft research proposal on a topic within one of the above thematic areas chosen by the applicant and not exceeding 4000 words.
Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their academic qualifications, the quality of the draft research proposal and previous research and other relevant experience. The shortlisted applicants may be called for an interview as a part of the evaluation.
