Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry PhD Studentship based in Plymouth

Overview

Does a polymorphism in the heme-oxygenase-1 gene lead to an increase in oxidative stress and diabetic nephropathy?

Ref: PCMD/GS0021

This studentship is based in Plymouth

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.

As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).

Approximately one third of patients with type 1 diabetes (TID) will develop diabetic nephropathy (DN), even with well controlled blood glucose. Oxidative stress (OS) induced by high glucose is known to cause cellular damage and has been suggested to play a role in the development of DN. Evidence has suggested that the regulation of gene expression by glucose may be different between patients who develop DN and those who do not. It is possible that this difference has a genetic basis. A possible candidate for this genetic susceptibility and increased OS is Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). HO-1 is a potent antioxidant enzyme and we have recently shown that there is an association of a mutation in the HO-1 (gene) with increased susceptibility to DN. The aim is to clarify the role of HO-1 in DN, this may result in a greater understanding of how DN develops which in turn may lead to the targeting of resources to a particular gene and development of genetic screening to identify those at higher risk of developing DN.

This post will have a starting date of 1 October 2010.
