UK: PhD Studentship at Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry

Overview

An Exploration of the Contemporary Working Life and Professionalism of General Practitioners

Ref: PCMD/GS/0024

This Studentship is based at Plymouth.

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract a PhD candidate of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.

As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).

We are seeking a candidate with a first degree or equivalent or a master’s qualification or equivalent in sociology or social anthropology to carry out an ethnographic study exploring the contemporary working life and professionalism of General Practitioners in the UK.

The roles, work and organizational context of general practitioners have altered greatly in recent decades. GPs are now more likely to work in large busy practices with many more women now entering the profession and an increased trend for both males and females to work part-time. The introduction of the new GP contract and increased emphasis on Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) associated with the Quality Outcomes Framework have led to the argument that GPs now live in an age of measurement, dominated by performance targets and the constant monitoring of screening and prescribing rates. There is a suggestion that new norms of professionalism are emerging in this context with a shift away from more vocation-led and paternalistic values to ones based on a commitment to improvement in quality of care, more respectful less paternal relationships between professionals and patients and the achievement of a better work life balance.

Using ethnography as the research method, this proposed PhD project will explore the everyday working life and professionalism of General Practitioners working in a number of rural and urban practices in Devon and Cornwall. Working under the supervision of Dr Oonagh Corrigan and Dr Rebecca Barnes, with support from the Clinical Education http://www.pms.ac.uk/research/index.php?group=3 and the Primary Care research groups http://www.pcmd.ac.uk/research/index.php?group=30 you will have an interest in furthering theoretical work on medical professionalism in the context of medical education and in the field of sociology of health, illness and medicine.

This position has a start date of 1 October 2010.

Funding Notes:

The stipend will be £13,290 (based on full time 09/10 rate). Tuition fees will be paid at the home rate. Candidates from countries outside the European Union will be liable for the difference between 'home student fees' and 'international student fees’. If you wish to be considered for this studentship you must confirm that you able to pay the international portion of the fee. For the 09/10 academic year this is £8500 but is likely to increase slightly each year. If you are selected you will be required to provide financial assurances.

For an informal discussion, please contact Dr Oonagh Corrigan on oonagh.corrigan@pms.ac.uk although applications must be made in accordance with the details shown below.
