Our vibrant, modern University has ambitious plans for its future. Our two main campuses in Cambridge and Chelmsford are being transformed with major capital investments. With an annual income of £139m, 28,000 students and 2,100 staff, we are a major force for higher education in the East of England.

About the role:

The Department of Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, invites applications for a Graduate Teaching Assistants/PhD studentship to commence in September 2010 lasting 3 years.

The position will involve research in areas of considerable clinical and neuroscientific interest and will also offer the opportunity to gain teaching experience to support an academic career. The Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) will investigate the topic of Social cognition in children with autism and deaf children, supervised by Drs. Amanda Ludlow and Roberto Gutierrez.

The aim of this PhD is to investigate social cognition in children with autism and deaf children and the relationship of emotion recognition and discrimination as well as its links with language and action. This will encompass looking at a variety of Theory of Mind and emotion processing tasks using both behavioural studies and brain imaging techniques (EEG). For further information, please contact Drs. Amanda Ludlow (amanda.ludlow@anglia.ac.uk) or Roberto Gutierrez (roberto.gutierrez@anglia.ac.uk).

Our department achieved an outstanding result in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) - one that makes us the UK’s top-rated psychology department in a post-1992 university, with just under half (45%) of our research rated as either “World-Leading” or “Internationally Excellent”, and a further 35% rated as “Internationally Recognized”. The department comprises two research groups and is equipped with state-of-the-art research laboratories. More information can be found on the departmental website (http://www.anglia.ac.uk).

The level of the award for both GTAs is £15,000 per annum and tuition fees will be paid for by the Faculty.
