Overview
DTU Informatics would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting September 15th 2010 or soonest possible thereafter. The project is financed by Unilever Research, Vlardingen Holland and DTU Informatics, Denmark.
Project Description
Anchored at the DTU Informatics Statistics Section the project will in close collaboration with Unilever Research, Vlardingen, Holland evaluate, develop and implement new statistical methodology for sensory and consumer studies, as a means of creating new insights from Unilever studies, and with particular focus on quantifying factors influencing sensory differentiation. The scientific focus will be on the combination of Thurstonian and statistical modelling for handling sensory and consumer data building on recent contributions by the DTU research group as illustrated by the recent R-packages sensR and ordinal.
Project background:
Sensory and consumer data consists of product testing by the use of human evaluations. Such data are heavily produced and used in food research and industry but also in other industries. The inherent problem of individual differences continues to challenge the day-to-day industrial practice of sensory and consumer data analysis.
Analysis methodologies:
Thurstonian modelling, Generalized linear models, Mixed models, Ordinal and rank based data analysis, Multivariate analysis, Discrimination and similarity testing, Signal Detection Theory (SDT).
Requirements
Candidates must have a science or engineering master degree with a clear data analysis and/or statistical profile or equivalent academic qualifications. Furthermore, good command of the English language is essential. Preference will be given to candidates who can document the ability to implement statistical methods in e.g. the R language.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the ITMAN Graduate School Programme of DTU Informatics. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules at DTU, which may be obtained here.
Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current Danish rules for PhD degree students.
Application
Applications must be submitted in English and we must have your online application by August 31st 2010. Please open the link in the grey bar below: "apply for this job online" (“søg stillingen online”).
Applications must include:
application (letter of motivation)
CV
documentation of a relevant completed M.Sc. or M.Eng.-degree
course and grade list of bachelor and master degrees
excel sheet with calculated weighted average converted to the Danish system.
All candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
