Overview
Description of project and background: During the next 10 to 20 years it is expected that synthetic fuels will be developed which will burn more efficiently and cleanly. Such clean fuels may be derived from fossil sources such as coal and oil or increasingly from biomass (starches, sugars, and cellulosic materials) using chemical or biological conversion methods. This project will help energy companies to develop such future cleaner fuels. Many types of combustion system emit soot particles into the atmosphere which are known to be hazardous due to their toxicity to human health, particularly the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The smaller particles (less than about 100nm in size) are believed to be the most hazardous, as they can penetrate deep into the human lung. This project will help companies develop future fuels which will emit fewer of these harmful soot particles.
A fully-funded PhD studentship for 3.5 years is available for suitably qualified UK/EU students. The project is funded by the EPSRC and it will involve experimental work with both a steady combustor and a diesel engine. The project will be based in the well-equipped combustion and fuels laboratories at UCL. The student will join the combustion and fuels research group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UCL: http://www.mecheng.ucl.ac.uk/research/thermofluids/ic-engines/ Applicants should have obtained (or expect to be awarded) a First or Upper Second (2.1) degree in an engineering or in a science discipline (physics, chemistry). Due to funding restrictions, only UK and EU nationals who have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to the start of the PhD are eligible to apply. Full UK/EU tuition fees and stipend of £15,300 per annum (tax free) for 3.5 years
