PhD Scholarship in Discontinuation of preventive drugs in primary care: Medical, ethical and organizational aspects.

The Department of Public Health, the Center for Healthy Aging at the University of Copenhagen is offering one PhD scholarship in ?Discontinuation of preventive drugs in primary care: Medical, ethical and organizational aspects" to commence the 1st of October 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is offered for a period of three years.

The Center for Healthy Aging was established in 2009 to promote new avenues of research and education focused on a lifespan approach to healthy aging. The approach is multidisciplinary and the research programs span a broad spectrum, from the molecular and cellular level to individuals and society (http://healthyaging.ku.dk/). The Center is organized around five research programs:

1a. Cellular Stress and Aging

1b. Neurobiology of Aging

2. Skeletal Muscle Metabolism

3. Individual Aging through the Lifespan

4. Society, Culture and Health Care Policy

5. Health Promotion, Communication and User-driven Innovation


Center for Healthy Aging is established as a research network at the Faculty of Health Sciences and is funded by the Danish Nordea Foundation, www.nordeafonden.dk.

It is a pre-requisite that the candidate is enrolled as PhD student at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen, at the Copenhagen Graduate School of Health Sciences in accordance to the provisionof Executive Order no. 18 of 14 January 2008 regarding the PhD degree. It is recommended that the application for enrolment be submitted once the reply regarding the granting of the fellowship is available.

Description of the field of study:

Around one million people in Denmark are using preventive drugs against cardiovascular diseases and other disorders. Considering discontinuation of the use of these drugs is often relevant due to uncertainty about indications, side-effects and non-compliance. The purpose of the PhD project is to examine barriers and enabling factors for relevant withdrawal from a general practice perspective.

Supervisor: Associate Professor John Sahl Andersen, Unit of General Practice, Department of Public Health.

Qualifications:

•Candidates are required to have a master degree in Public Health, Medicin or equivalent.
•Fluent English and Danish, written and spoken

The PhD student is also required to have research potential, to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.

Employment conditions:
Employment is for a three-year period and is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) on 1 October 2008, enclosure 5. Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). Commencing salary will be a minimum of DKK 305,682 per year (October 2009 level) plus pension contribution and possibility to negotiate wage.

The PhD fellow is obliged to carry out - without additional pay - allocated teaching-related tasks, etc. of up to 840 working hours during their period of employment.

The PhD candidate will be expected, over the three-year period, to acquire experience in teaching or other types of presentations. The tentative start date is the 1st of October 2010 or soon thereafter.

The PhD scholarships are subject to academic approval in accordance with Executive Order no. 284 of 25 April 2008 regarding employment of teachers and scientific staff at universities, etc. under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Applicants will be informed of the composition of the committee.
