Doctoral research fellowship within Buddhist studies, Norway

Overview

Position as doctoral research fellowship (post code 1017) within Buddhist studies is available at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS).

The successful candidate is expected to study aspects of Buddhism as transmitted, interpreted and practiced in East and/or South Asia. The candidate’s doctoral project should affiliate with research on Buddhism at IKOS. The fellowship is open to projects from a wide range of disciplinary and methodological approaches, such as religious studies, anthropology, literature, philology, and history of ideas. Comparative and/or multidisciplinary projects will be considered positively.

It is expected that the candidate primarily will analyse data in one or several of the region's languages. Candidates must therefore demonstrate advanced active skills in at least one relevant Asian language. Experience from working and doing fieldwork in the area relevant for the candidate’s project will be considered favourably.

The successful candidate is expected to affiliate with the existing research milieu or network and to contribute to the further development of this.

Candidates who are accepted must participate in the Faculty of Humanities’ researcher education programme (cf. regulations and supplementary provisions for the faculty’s researcher education) and must also engage in the designated research activities on a 100 percent basis. The designated aim of the project is to complete a doctoral dissertation to be defended at a public disputation for the Ph.D.-degree.


The position is available for a period of three years.

Qualifications

A Master degree or equivalent in an area relevant to the topic of the doctoral dissertation. The Master degree must have been obtained by the closing date for this announcement.

Qualifications and Personal Skills

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project description and on the assumed academic and personal ability on the part of the candidates to complete the dissertation within the given time frame. The short-listed candidates may be called for an interview at the University of Oslo.
