AGMARDT Postdoctoral Fellowship, New Zealand

Overview

AGMARDT supports postdoctoral fellowship research underpinning the agricultural, pastoral, horticultural and forestry industries in New Zealand. This is to ensure that the research and training capabilities and capacity are maintained at the level needed to achieve and maintain competitive advantage within the global agribusiness sector.

The Trust shall achieve this purpose by awarding Fellowships pursuant to these Regulations and on the recommendation of the AGMARDT Advisory Panel provided however that the Trust may at any time choose not to offer further awards.

Number:

A maximum number of up to three postdoctoral fellowships may be awarded to New Zealand Universities and CRIs in October of each year. The University or CRI will, in association with an AGMARDT representative, identify the Fellow proposed to carry out the research.

Fewer Fellowships will be awarded if it is the opinion of AGMARDT that fewer than three applications of sufficient merit have been received.

Research Areas:

Fellowships are available to Universities and CRIs within New Zealand for research in line with AGMARDT's purpose as set out in AGMARDT Postdoctoral Fellowship Regulations.

The AGMARDT Trustees will consider research applications in any field related to agriculture, horticulture or forestry for each funding round where a significant capability or capacity short-fall has been identified.

Eligibility:

The Applicant must be a New Zealand University or CRI.

It is the Applicant's responsibility to identify an appropriate Fellow to carry out the proposed research project at a New Zealand University or within a CRI. However the Fellow must have either been awarded their PhD (or equivalent) or completed all requirements for the award prior to grant approval by the Trust. Where the award has not yet been conferred, the Fellow must have received written notification from the appropriate authority advising that he/she has passed all written and oral examinations and is eligible to graduate. The Fellow must be either a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident.

In order to comply with the objects of the Trust, funds must be applied to promote and encourage in New Zealand's interest the agricultural, pastoral, horticultural and forestry industries.

To assist in meeting these objects the Trust will need to be satisfied that the Fellow is likely to remain in New Zealand on completion of the Fellowship and be involved in the research area in terms of the proposed project. Therefore the opportunities for future employment for the Fellow with either the University or relevant CRI should be clearly stated in the application form.

The Applicant must identify an appropriate Fellow in terms of Regulation 4.2 above within one year of the date of the grant offer. The nominated Fellow will require the approval of the Trust prior to the grant offer being confirmed. The proposed Fellow, if such a person has been identified at the time the application is lodged, should not be identified in the application

Fellowship Payments:

The Fellowship will be made by way of an AGMARDT contract between the University or CRI and AGMARDT, which will supersede these Regulations. The University or CRI will contract separately with the Fellow. The University's of CRI's normal conditions of work and use of facilities shall apply to the Fellow and work not contained in the agreed project outside the University and any linked CRI is not permitted.

AGMARDT will provide a grant of up to $190,000 (GST inclusive) to the University or CRI for a two-year Fellowship or $285,000 (GST inclusive) for a three year Fellowship by means specified in the contract. This will include a contribution towards direct costs of up to $30,000 (GST inclusive) per annum and allow the University or CRI to pay a stipend of up to $65,000 (GST exclusive) per annum to the Fellow. The Fellow is liable to pay income tax on the stipend if not employed by the University or CRI. However where the Fellow is employed by the University or CRI, PAYE must be deducted from the stipend. The University or CRI may top up the Fellowship stipend.

Payment will be withheld if the six-monthly progress reports are not submitted on time. The final payment will be withheld pending receipt and approval of the final report.
