Taiwan: Doctoral Dissertation Research in the U.S. Grants

Overview

The grants are designed to assist doctoral candidates at local universities in all academic fields in social sciences, humanities and the arts, to work a doctoral dissertation topic by consulting scholars, collecting data, and/or auditing courses at a U.S. university or research institution.

The duration of the grants ranges from six months to ten months. The grants may begin no earlier than August 1, 2011. They must end no later than August 31, 2012.

§ Grant Provisions and Conditions

All recipients of the grants must obtain admission to a U.S. university. They will receive the limited accident and medical insurance.

Recipients who receive funds from other sources are required to report such grants to FSE. If any of the Fulbright grant benefits are duplicated by the additional grant, the Fulbright grant may be reduced accordingly.

§ Benefits:

1. Monthly stipend between US$700 and US$1,500 for up to 10 months
2. Placement services by IIE
3. Possible placement in a three-week summer pre-academic program in the U.S., with all expenses paid
4. Limited accident and health insurance

§ Eligibility Criteria:

1. Citizenship and permanent residence in the Republic of China (Taiwan)
2. Completion of at least two years of doctoral-level study in Taiwan., and an approved dissertation topic for which special materials or advisors are available in the U.S. in the appropriate field
3. Physical presence for an oral interview in September or October, 2010 at the Foundation (FSE) in Taipei
4. Students already in the U.S. are ineligible for a grant
5. No applicant shall receive more than one Fulbright Student Program grant
6. Applicants who wish to pursue studies as medical students are not eligible
7. Applicants with medical degrees may receive grants for advanced academic study, but not for internships or residencies


§ Application Procedure:

2. Please send the following required documents to FSE, postmarked no later than August 16, 2010:

• application forms
• CV (in Chinese)
• one copy of authorized English transcript for undergraduate studies and for graduate studies in sealed envelopes
• three letters of reference (either sent in sealed envelopes or typed online by referees)
• certificates in English for all degrees earned
• copies of TOEFL Score Report (taken since March 2009, minimum score: iBT 80 or CBT 213), and any other applicable test results (GRE, GMAT, etc.), or evidence of having registered for a TOEFL and a GRE or GMAT administration no later than October 2010
• a study plan in English, which should include:

topic, objectives, an outline of activities or nature of project (including courses to be audited), a detailed description of area of specialization, institution(s) where the project is to be carried out, and the potential impact the U.S. study experience will have on the applicant's future professional development and on his/her academic field in general.
The length of the study plan may be one and a half or two pages long.

§ Selection Procedure

1. A Selection Committee of the Foundation will review all application documents and conduct oral interviews with candidates in September or October 2010. Candidates will be informed in writing if they are to be invited for an interview, and must be physically present for this interview.
2. After the Selection Committee has completed its work, candidates will be informed of the decision by the Fulbright Program Office of the Foundation. The award will still be subject to the candidate's admission to a U.S. institution approved by the Foundation and subject to approval by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB).
