Overview
ETH Zurich has come to symbolise excellent education, groundbreaking basic research and applied results that are beneficial for society as a whole. Founded in 1855, it today offers researchers an inspiring environment and students a comprehensive education as one of the leading international universities for technology and the natural sciences.
ETH Zurich grants scholarships to students whose own funds and those of their immediate families are insufficient. To be considered for a scholarship, a student must be performing well.
In addition to scholarships from the general ETH scholarship funds, special scholarships are also available for some programmes. The granting of these scholarships is generally subject to conditions such as superb study achievement or a certain nationality.
Bachelor and Master students, who are Swiss citizens or holders of a B permit, must concurrently apply to their residence canton for a cantonal scholarship. (Swiss citizens from abroad should apply to their home canton; refugees must apply to their asylum canton).
Non-Swiss Bachelor and Master students with a B permit should clarify whether they can obtain a scholarship from their country of origin, since ETH Zurich cannot support non-Swiss students with a full scholarship. Non-Swiss Bachelor students can apply for an ETH scholarship after having passed the first-year exams. Non-Swiss Master students following an ETH Master programme can apply after having successfully completed the second semester.
ETH scholarships are usually only granted as a secondary source of finance.
Please consult the ETH Academic Handbook and/or http://www.rectorate.ethz.ch/ for further details.
Applying for a scholarship
Your application for an ETH scholarship must be complete and legible. It must include the necessary financial statements and be handed in by the given deadline. Application forms can be obtained from the Scholarships Office. You should renew your application annually.
Deadlines
Applications should be handed in between 1 March and 30 June to obtain a scholarship for the academic year beginning in autumn (autumn and spring semesters).
Late applications are only processed after the first round of applications which results in considerable delay. First semester Master or Bachelor students (new incoming students) and students returning from leave of absence must submit their application by the end of the second week of the autumn semester. (Important: new incoming foreign students who do not hold a permanent CH residence permit cannot apply for a scholarship).
Late applications are not considered.
Financial statements
The following financial statements must accompany your application:
- your parents’ tax invoices from the previous year (both the federal tax invoice and the municipal tax invoice based on their tax return);
- copy of the cantonal office’s scholarship decisions for the academic year in question or semester;
- copy of similar grant decisions from other organisations;
- copy of any decisions taken relating to loans;
- copy of any allowances entitlements (orphan, pension or disability allowances);
- evidence of transport coasts (only if domicil is not in the City of Zurich). Bachelor and Master students with a B permit must provide the following financial statements:
- your parents’ tax invoice and/or equivalent document indicating their income and assets for the previous year;
- copies of scholarship decisions or similar grants from your country of origin or other organisations;
- copy of any decisions relating to loans;
- evidence of transport coasts (only if domicil is not in the City of Zurich).
Updated copies of these financial statements must be submitted with each application (also when you are requesting an extension of your scholarship). If you cannot provide these statements by the submission deadline, they can be handed in afterwards – you will not be sent a reminder to this effect. Foreign currencies must be converted into Swiss francs.
Please make sure that you indicate your name, department/course and your student number on any documents submitted after the deadline.
Accompanying letters
If you wish to outline your reasons for applying for an ETH Scholarship, please include an accompanying letter along with your application. Specific questions and problems can be discussed during the consultation hours.
Study achievements
To assess your application, we need to know about your performance achievements during the semester and your exam results in addition to the financial statements mentioned above. (see Stipendienreglement ETH Zürich, Art. 9.)

Processing your application/notification of outcome
During the autumn semester/at the beginning of the spring semester, decisions are taken on full applications handed in before the deadline. Decisions on all other applications are taken during the summer. You will be notified in writing about the decision taken on your application. Applications submitted without any financial statements are rejected, if the missing documents are not promptly provided following the submission of your application.
