Project Name: Language Acquisition in young children with hearing loss enrolled in early intervention
Project Description: Children receiving cochlear implants at an early age continue to have variable outcomes. It is likely that this partly results from the etiology of hearing loss and its disruption to perception of linguistic cues, but it may also be contributed to by the type and degree of habilitation provided in the management of such children.
This project aims to explore the relationships between language acquisition and specific deterministic factors, and may include:
■Comparative language outcomes for prelingually deaf children fitted with hearing aids, and cochlear implants, and whether language is acquired continually, or if there plateaus in language development;
■Outcomes for children with different etiologies including: ANSD, CMV, LVAS as well as those with mild and unilateral hearing loss;
■Speech and language acquisition rates for children with hearing loss who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds;
■Effects of specific modes of habilitation delivery (eg. remote vs face-to-face) in regards to outcomes achieved for different populations of children;
■The site-of-lesion, disruption to timing cues and functional outcomes in children with auditory neuropathy, ultimately to determine best management for individuals diagnosed with this disorder
Applicants should have an Australian undergraduate degree (with first class honours), or Masters degree with a substantial thesis component, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline (such as audiology or speech pathology), and not already have completed a PhD.
Prospective students should, in the first instance, submit a covering letter detailing relevant experience, a CV, and an academic transcript to the principal supervisor Dr Elisabeth Harrison at Elisabeth.Harrison@mq.edu.au or phone 61 (0)2 9850 6716.
The candidate must commence by 31 January 2011
This scholarship will have a living allowance in line with the Australian Postgraduate Award. For 2011 this is valued at $22,860 pa tax exempt. Tuition fees are covered for domestic candidates under RTS funding. International students will be expected to pay the cost of their tuition fees and other costs associated with their enrolment.
Applicants will need to complete a candidature/scholarship application form and arrange for two academic referee reports to be submitted to the Higher Degree Research Office. Refer to: http://www.hdr.mq.edu.au/information_about/applications for further application instructions. Macquarie University will advise the successful applicant of entitlements at the time of scholarship offer.
