Overview
In honour of the centenary (in 2011) of Marshall McLuhan’s birth, the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information in association with St. Michael’s College offers five Fellowships in the field of culture and technology. We welcome applications from individuals at all career levels, from postdoctoral students through to senior academics. Successful applicants will spend between three and twelve months in residence at the University of Toronto.
The program provides each Fellow with a stipend of $10,000, office space (with IT services), and library privileges. We anticipate that academics on research leave may find these Fellowships particularly attractive. Fellows will be appointed under categories approved by University of Toronto policies (e.g., visiting professor, adjunct professor, status-only) and may also be granted the status of Visiting Fellow at St. Michael's College. Temporary teaching opportunities may be available for more junior applicants provided there is a fit between a Fellow’s expertise and the Faculty’s programs.
Regular interaction with students and faculty in seminars, lectures and informal conversation is a vital aspect of the Program, enhancing the Fellow’s experiences and the overall intellectual environment of the Faculty of Information, its McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology, and St. Michael's College's undergraduate program in Book and Media Studies.
Application requirements
To be considered for a Fellowship, application materials must be received at the Faculty of Information by the March 1, 2011. A complete Marshall McLuhan Centenary Visiting Fellowship application consists of the following:
1. a cover letter briefly stating your reasons for applying,
2. a curriculum vitae, including the names and contact information of two referees,
3. a brief (up to 1500 word) statement of research focus, and
4. a 200 word research abstract.
How to apply
Please send applications by email to dean.ischool@utoronto.ca with the subject line: APPLICATION - McLuhan Centenary Visiting Fellow. Application materials should be sent as an attachment in a single file, preferably in portable document format (.pdf).
Applications will be considered by the Executive Committee of the Coach House Institute (CHI) of the Faculty of Information and will be adjudicated on the basis of proposal excellence, scholarly potential, and likely breadth of impact. Notification of awards to selected Fellows will be made by April 2, 2011. Awards will be tenable after May 1, 2011, but must commence before the end of 2011.
