TISS-Max Planck Post Doctoral & Doctoral Research Fellowships

Overview

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen, Germany are offering a limited number of Full- time Research Fellowships at both the doctoral (two nos.) and postdoctoral (one no.) levels for the 2010-11 academic year. The research study should focus on ethnographic research on various religions and their practices in the Mumbai city. An important focus of the project will be the links between media-centered religious aspirations, including its transnational ramifications, and local political and economic ambitions. Ethnographic field research will pay close attention to the transnational circulation of religious media, plus uses of the internet, which now combines all forms of audio and audiovisual media. The goal is to arrive at a better understanding of how such media practices become part of the lives and aspirations in this challenging urban setting.

Thematic Areas of Focus

The doctoral fellowships are for a three-year period and the postdoctoral fellowship is for a duration of one year.


Broad areas for postdoctoral and doctoral research:

· Migration, globalization and religious mobilization
· Role of media technology and media practices for religious dynamics in Mumbai
· Ethnographic analysis of religious media practices and urban life in Mumbai

Postdoctoral Fellowship

Terms of the postdoctoral fellowship:

· Applicants should have completed Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology or Sociology or any other relevant area at least two years ago from an Indian University or any foreign University.
· All applicants who are currently working will have to either quit their job or apply through proper channel and will have to take permission to be available full-time at TISS to pursue research.
· International applicant if selected for the postdoctoral fellowship should be prepared to spend a year in Mumbai. Visa to facilitate the travel and stay in India would be facilitated by TISS.
· Indian applicants will have to attend an interview for purposes of selection. International applicants will be telephonically interviewed.
· Upon selection international travel to India has to be borne by the applicant.
· Institute will facilitate hiring accommodation in Mumbai. There is paucity of accommodation facilities on the campus.

Areas of Work:

· The applicant can propose

- to turn a dissertation (in the areas mentioned above) into a publishable manuscript
- to prepare shorter publications based on the doctoral project (in the areas mentioned above).
- propose any research project in the above mentioned areas tenable for a period of one year.

Fellowship & Support:

· The fellow will be provided with shared office space and a computer in the Media Lab and to all TISS academic, institutional, and recreational resources.
· Fellows are expected to participate in the “Urban Aspirations” – Urban Media Lab project.
· Monthly stipend of Rs. 40,000/- for one year.
· One time contingency grant of Rs. 20,000/-
· Fieldwork grant not exceeding Rs. 80,000/- to cover travel expenses and related expenses incurred during data collection.
· The fellow is expected to adhere to the time schedule s/he proposes. Any change should be notified in advance.
· There will be an advisory committee to facilitate the work. S/he is expected to keep in touch with the committee on a regular basis and discuss and share her/his work at every stage.
· Fellow is expected to present and publish at least one paper based on the post doctoral research.

Doctoral Research Fellowship

Terms of the fellowship:

· The applicant should have completed M.Phil. in Cultural Anthropology or Social Sciences or Humanities or Urban Planning or other related disciplines
· Candidates with M.A. in any one of the above disciplines and 5 years of work experience in the proposed area of work are also eligible to apply.
· Admission to Ph.D. with fellowship is as per the TISS norms for admission to Ph.D. Applicants have to take a written test and interview as per the procedures.
· Applicants are expected to fill the application form and enclose an original research proposal in the fields mentioned in this announcement.
· Knowledge of qualitative social science (field) research methods and fieldwork experience is most desirable.

Current research scholars at TISS working in the subject areas mentioned for this fellowship, can apply with a covering letter and the proposal. Those receiving scholarships from UGC, ICCSR, ICMR etc., will not be eligible for the TISS-Max Planck fellowship.

Fellowship & Support:
· The research scholars will be allocated research guides and will be provided with shared office space and a computer in the Media Lab.
· Fellows are expected to participate in the “Urban Aspirations” – Urban Media Lab project.
· Access to all TISS academic, institutional, and recreational resources.
· Monthly fellowship of Rs. 15,000/- for three years with incremental increase in fellowship each year.
· Contingency grant of Rs. 20,000/- per year for three years.

Application Process

In order to be considered for the postdoctoral fellowship applicants are required to provide curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and details of two referees. The application should be accompanied by a research proposal in the subject areas mentioned above in not more than 2000 words. This should include the background, nature, importance, specific objectives, methodology, timeline and outcome. The due date for receiving applications as a soft copy is 18th January for postdoctoral fellowships. Mail the copy to deanrnd@tiss.edu

Applicants for the doctoral fellowships are expected to fill the application for Ph.D.

available on the TISS website and enclose a research proposal in the subject areas mentioned above in not more than 1000 words. Applicants will follow the Ph.D. admission process. The application has to be accompanied with a Demand Draft for Rs. 750/-. The due date for receiving applications for doctoral fellowships is 18th January.

Postdoctoral and doctoral fellow applicants should send their applications with all necessary accompanying documents addressed to the: Dean, Research & Development, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Sion-Trombay Road, Deonar, Mumbai 400 88, INDIA.

Applicants will be notified if they are short- listed by 24th January. The process of selections will be completed by early February and selected candidates are expected to join the programme by early March.
