Fulbright Scottish Studies Scholar Awards

Overview

One award is offered to an outstanding UK professional or academic to undertake lecturing, carry out research relating to Scottish Studies, and develop institutional links with any accredited US institution.

Scottish Studies can be conducted in any subject area such as Scottish history, law, art, music or politics. This award hopes to foster mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Scotland, in the hope of developing the 'Scottish Studies' discipline amongst American Higher Education institutions and encouraging further exchange opportunities in Scotland for the host university's students, academics and other professionals. The appointment will be for a period of one semester (4-6 months) or one academic year (8-10 months) beginning in autumn 2012.
Award Benefits

The award is for the US dollar equivalent of £11,000 for a one semester project (4-6 months), or £22,000 for a full academic year-long project (8-10 months). Awards will be paid in instalments in US dollars (converted at the prevailing rate at the time of processing each instalment) directly to the grantee, the first of which is typically given just prior to departure from the UK. This funding is intended as a contribution towards any institutional fees, travel to/from the US, accommodation and general maintenance costs whilst in the US. Limited sickness and accident benefit coverage, visa sponsorship and processing and participation in a number of Fulbright Scholar events are also included. Once in the US, candidates may also apply for an additional travel grant to accept guest lecturing invitations at other US institutions.

Selection Criteria

Minimum eligibility for this award category:

- UK citizen (resident anywhere)
- hold or expect to receive a PhD (or equivalent professional training or experience) in a relevant area before departure to the US
- Projects which involve direct patient clinical contact are not permitted. Awards are not available for peripatetic visits or attendance at conferences only. US nationals, those with dual US-UK citizenship and those resident in the US may not apply.

Preference will be given to those who do not have extensive, recent experience in the US (6 months). Please read the Terms and Conditions for this award before making an application.

In making these awards the Commission is looking not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to your home country upon returning.
