PhD scholarship is available in Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences, at the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) Macquarie University

Overview

A full-time PhD scholarship is available in Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences, at the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) Macquarie University.

Please quote the allocation reference number 2010218 on your application form.

Project Name: Human blood plasma colorectal cancer biomarkers

Project Description:

The discovery, evaluation and validation of novel protein biomarkers of early colorectal cancer (CRC) detection, pathological stage and chemotoxicity are urgently needed – especially because early detection leads to a dramatically enhanced survival. This PhD project investigates the discovery of new blood based human colorectal cancer protein biomarkers through a collaborative China:NSW cancer proteomics program recently funded by NSW government located within the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) at Macquarie University. The candidate will discover protein profiles in plasma that are indicative of colorectal cancer (CRC) - the second most common cancer by incidence and cause of death in the Western world and most common registrable cancer in Australia (13,000 new cases resulting in 13.1% of Australian cancer deaths). This will be achieved through the discovery, quantitation and validation of low abundance proteins that change during CRC using the most advanced proteomics technologies available and a new abundant protein immunodepletion method patented by Macquarie University.

Laboratory experience and a first-class BSc(Hons) or equivalent in proteomics, protein chemistry, biochemistry and/or molecular cell biology would be highly advantageous.
