Overview
Applications are invited for Marie Curie fellowships within the Marie Curie Initial Training Network SMALL - Surfaces for molecular recognition at the atomic level. Three of the network's 22 PhD positions are presently available at the Division of Synchrotron Radiation Research (http://www.sljus.lu.se), Department of Physics (http://www.lth.se/fysik/english), Lund University (http://www.lu.se/lund-university), Sweden.
The projects of the three positions are concerned with x-ray spectroscopy and atomic-scale microscopy investigations of the interaction between solid surfaces and gases. More specifically, the projects aim at studying, on a fundamental level, how molecular recognition can be achieved in surface catalytic systems and nanosensors. Much of the experimental work will be carried out at the National Swedish Synchrotron Radiation Facility MAX-lab (http://www.maxlab.lu.se). In particular, use will be made of a novel x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy instrument for the investigation of surfaces under both chemical reaction and ultrahigh vacuum conditions.
Eligible Candidates
The successful candidate should have a strong background in Physics, Chemistry, Nanotechnology, or Materials Science. He or she should have a strong interest in working within the realm of Surface Science and/or Nanotechnology.
The research work is carried out within the Marie Curie Initial Training Network SMALL (http://www.small-itn.eu) with ample opportunities for collaborations with experimentalists and theoreticians. SMALL is funded by the European Commission through the 7th Framework Programme. Transnational mobility is a compulsory requirement for all PhD students employed by SMALL. For further information on the eligibility rules see http://www.small-itn.eu. The network language is English, and PhD studies at Lund University may be carried out in English, as well.
Benefits
The salary is €44,105 (~ £39,700) per annum for fellows without family obligations and €48,025 (~ £43,200) per annum for fellows with family obligations. The post is available from 1 June 2010 or any other date in 2010 according to agreement. The length of the Swedish PhD education is four years.
For more details on the positions and how to apply please access the official announcements from http://www.sljus.lu.se/shownews.html?id=17 or from http://www.science.lu.se/o.o.i.s/13456 (references 2010/926, 2010/927, and 2010/928).
Closing date: 20 April 2010.
