Overview
The Paul Scherrer Institute is with 1300 employees the largest research centre for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland and a worldwide leading user laboratory. Its research activities are concentrated on the three main topics of solid-state physics, energy and environmental research as well as human health.
R&D activities in the Laboratory for Reactor Physics and Systems Behaviour (LRS) within the Nuclear Energy and Safety Research Department (NES) at PSI include in-depth analysis of the dynamic behaviour of the Swiss nuclear power plants, Gen-III reactors and related research. The LRS group “Nuclear Systems Behaviour" aims at deepening the understanding of the complex phenomenology determining the safety of light water reactors under transient conditions. This is achieved through the application of “best-estimate” transient reactor analysis codes and, in collaboration with the Laboratory for Thermal-Hydraulics (LTH), through the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes.
Supported by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) research efforts will be dedicated to the development of a novel methodology, aimed at a best-estimate evaluation of the behaviour of passive safety systems of Gen-III/III+ reactors during Design Basis Accidents. It is foreseen to combine best-estimate thermal-hydraulic system codes and 3-D containment codes. For this challenging task we are looking for a
Postdoctoral Fellow
nuclear / mechanical / chemical engineer or physicist
Your tasks
◦Model passive systems of Gen-III+ reactors using the thermal-hydraulic code TRACE
◦Perform investigation on passive systems behaviour and code predictive capabilities on the basis of available experimental data
◦In cooperation with a second post-doc, develop a methodology based on coupling TRACE thermal-hydraulic code with the containment code GOTHIC
You will work in close collaboration with the STARS team (http://stars.web.psi.ch) in the Laboratory of Reactor Physics and Systems Behaviour and with the Laboratory for Thermal-Hydraulics.
Your profile
You should ideally have experience with the use of best-estimate thermal-hydraulic codes (RELAP5, TRACE, etc) and with programming languages (FORTRAN). A PhD-level education in engineering or physics or similar working experience is a prerequisite with a very good understanding of heat transfer and thermal-hydraulics of nuclear reactors. You enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary international team. Fluency in English is expected.
