Overview

PhD Research Fellow in Marine Biology - (ref no 2010/4779)

Institute of Biology is organised with one Centre of Excellence and three research programmes. The research at the Institute covers a wide range of fields within biology, such as genetics, ecology, evolution, etc. The Institute of Biology has approximately 120 employees and about 350 students from bachelor to PhD level. The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 1 October, 2010.

Job description:

The research will focus on experimental zooplankton ecology, and will evolve around zooplankton inter- and intra-specific individual interactions in marine systems. Such interactions are seminal in shaping pelagic distributions and dynamics.

The research will utilize both field caught and cultured marine crustacean and/or gelatinous plankton, and a range of methods including contemporary video based analyses. Opportunities for supplementary field or modeling work exist. The PhD research fellow will be affiliated to the research program Marine Biology at Department of Biology (http://www.bio.uio.no/mb), and will be encouraged to interact within our established local, national and international research networks.
Applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The project proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.


Eligible Candidates

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in Biology, preferably with a focus on marine or aquatic ecology or behavioral ecology.

The applicants should possess analytical skills, and excellent written and oral communication abilities. Experience with pelagic research, pelagic field sampling, culturing or experimentation with plankton, video methods, experimental design, statistics and handling of large data sets is also relevant.

The PhD Research Fellow will interact within a network of researchers and students, and need to possess collaborative abilities and a personality to do so.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitteed no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months. Salary:

PhD Research Fellow (SKO 1017), pay grade: 45-51 (NOK 355 400 ¿ 394 200 per year, depending on seniority/qualifications)
