Overview
FLTA Program is for English Language Teachers and a part of the Fulbright Student Program. The program is aimed at strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S colleges and universities while providing teachers of English with the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States. The grant is for one academic year and is non-renewable.
To qualify the applicants must:
- Be University or High School teacher of English
- Hold a Bachelor degree. MA degrees are highly desirable
- Fluency in English, with minimum IBT score of 80, Institutional TOEFL score of 550
- At least 2 years of teaching experience
- No younger than 22 and no older than 29 at time of application
- Be available for a personal interview with the Fulbright Selection
Profile:
FLTA candidates must be enthusiastic about teaching. They must have a sincere interest in teaching their native language and culture to American students. Through their application they should demonstrate knowledge of their culture and current events in their home country. They should have leadership skills, the ability to motivate students and the ability to relate to them in an emphatic manner. FLTAs should have a desire to meet people and become a part of the community by participating in community events and campus activities. They should be able to work creatively, be self-reliant but good team players who maintain excellent relationships with faculty, staff and students.
Many institutions request FLTAs who have an interest and ability to live in small towns or are adaptable to living in rural areas. They request that their FLTAs have excellent organizational and computer skills. They prefer people who have interests in sports, outdoor activities, music, dance, theatre, literature, poetry or cooking. Most of all, they look for candidates who demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to learn.
Timelines:
April - May: Program is announced through media and U.S. Embassy website
July - August: Fulbright selection panel interview with candidates
September: Application of final candidates are submitted to FLTA office
January -February: Finalists are announced by FLTA office
June: Predeparture orientation
July - August: Departure
