Greece: 2 PhD positions in Physical Chemistry/Chemical Physics

Overview

Two PhD positions are available at IESL-FORTH in Crete, Greece in the field of Chemical Reaction Dynamics, supported by the ICONIC EU Initial Training Network program. Successful candidates will make use and help improve state of the art ion imaging techniques and cutting-edge laser technology to study and control chemical reactions at the molecular level.

Program Description

The candidates can be involved in one or more of the following projects:

1) In research aiming to understand how weak bonding (i.e. solvation) in gas phase clusters affects molecular photochemistry and how we can use that to control chemical reactions. The candidates will use a combination of ns and fs lasers (from UV to IR wavelengths) and state of the art ion imaging techniques, such as slice imaging, to measure the kinetic energy and spatial distributions of photofragments and photoelectrons following the photolysis/photoionization of organic molecules and biomolecules inside and outside clusters.

2) In work in the field of the bimolecular reaction dynamics, using lasers and a dual, parallel molecular beam imaging setup, to investigate the mechanisms of radical-molecule and ion-molecule reactions in quantum-level detail.
3) In more technical work aiming to improve the current state of the art in imaging techniques employing ideas like field ionization and photoelectron slicing and to utilize the power of ion imaging in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry applications.

The PhD training program is provided in collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry of the University of Crete. The candidates will carry out the bulk of their research at IESL-FORTH in Crete, Greece but as members of the ICONIC European Training Network, they will be encouraged to carry out experiments in other network labs around Europe in collaborative visits. Furthermore, the operation of a LaserLab Europe facility at IESL-FORTH, will allow the candidates to interact and network with scientists throughout Europe, which are visiting FORTH to carry out forefront research in attosecond science, filamentation phenomena and secondary light source applications, laser-materials interactions, art conservation using lasers and more.
Chemistry, Physics and related disciplines graduates are encouraged to apply. FORTH is an equal opportunity employer. Applications from women and minorities are particularly welcome.
