ANU Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Fellow at Australian National University

State, Society and Governance in Melanesia (SSGM) is a vibrant multi-disciplinary research unit, in the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies in the College of Asia and the Pacific. It is the leading international centre for applied research into contemporary governance issues in Melanesia. The program is funded in part from the Operating Grant and in part from external funds.

SSGM seeks to appoint up to two early to mid career social scientists who have ongoing research interests in either Timor Leste or Vanuatu. The appointee(s) will be expected to conduct independent applied research in a multi-disciplinary research environment, publish in peer-reviewed journals and for a broader policy audience, contribute to SSGM's teaching program and to its extensive outreach program, which seeks to bridge the gap between academic and policy-making communities in Australia and the region.

Role statement PURPOSE STATEMENT:

State Society and Governance in Melanesia (SSGM) is part of the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies in the College of Asia and the Pacific. SSGM is the leading international centre for applied research into contemporary governance issues in Melanesia. In addition to its scholarly goals, SSGM maintains a strong commitment to active engagement with policy communities in Australia and the region.

SSGM seeks to appoint up to two early to mid career social scientists, who have ongoing research interests in either Timor Leste or Vanuatu. The appointee(s) will be expected to conduct independent applied research in a multi-disciplinary research environment, contribute to SSGM's teaching program and to its extensive outreach program, which seeks to bridge the gap between academic and policy-making communities in Australia and the region.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:

Position Dimension & Relationships:

The appointee(s) will be expected to work collegially with SSGM staff, both academic and general, to contribute towards the achievement of research, educational and community engagement outcomes in accordance with the strategic goals of SSGM, the School, College and ANU more broadly. He or she will be expected to conduct independent research within their area of expertise and publish in peer-reviewed journals and for a broader policy audience. Equally important, the appointee(s) will be required to conduct policy briefings for government, donors and other regional stakeholders and to contribute to SSGM's teaching program which includes undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, Higher Degree Research (HDR) supervision and delivery of executive and professional development courses.

Selection criteria

Academic Level A

1. PhD or equivalent research and professional experience in a relevant field combined with a promising record of scholarly research and publication. Applicants who have recently submitted, or are close to submitting a PhD, may also be considered.
2. Knowledge of the formal and informal institutions of governance, policy-making environment, development issues and leadership in Timor Leste or Vanuatu.
3. Field research experience in Timor Leste or Vanuatu and the ability to use an appropriate language spoken in Timor Leste or Vanuatu for research purposes.
4. Ability to conduct quality applied social science research under limited supervision.
5. Capacity and willingness to contribute to SSGM's research-led teaching, including teaching into courses and through assisting with the supervision of HDR students.
6. Capacity and willingness to contribute to SSGM's outreach activities in Australia and the region, to engage with policy communities, to provide policy-relevant briefings and/or undertake research consultancies, and to relate academic research to policy advice and formulation.
7. Ability to cooperate with and maintain effective relationships with staff and students at all levels in a cross-disciplinary academic environment, as well as senior personnel in other universities, governments and NGOs in Australia and the region.
8. Submission of a proposed program of research which is consistent with SSGM priorities and research interests, and capable of being completed during the term of the Fellowship.
9. A demonstrated high level of understanding of equal opportunity principles and a commitment to the application of EO policies in a university context.


Academic Level B

1. PhD or equivalent research and professional experience in a relevant field combined with a track record of scholarly research and publication.

7. Ability to cooperate and maintain effective relationships with staff and students at all levels in a cross-disciplinary academic environment, as well as senior personnel in other universities, governments and NGOs in Australia and the region.
8. Submission of a proposed program of research which is consistent with SSGM priorities and research interests, and capable of being completed during the term of the Fellowship.
