China Scholarship Council Postgraduate Research Scholarship (USYD–CSC PGRS)

Overview

The University of Sydney – China Scholarship Council Postgraduate Research Scholarship (USYD–CSC PGRS) allows high-calibre postgraduate research students from selected universities in the People’s Republic of China to carry out full-degree PhD studies at the University of Sydney. Up to 11 Postgraduate Research Scholarships will be offered under this scheme in 2011, for commencement of PhD studies in July. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will graduate with a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney.

Scholarship Benefits

The USYD–CSC Postgraduate Research Scholarship provides award holders with the following benefits:
a. a faculty tuition scholarship to cover tuition fees (course fees and student activities fees);
b. a living allowance as prescribed by the Chinese Government;
c. a minimum cost international airfare from China to Sydney, and return on expiry of the scholarship;
d. the cost of an Australian student visa application fee;
e. the cost of Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the scholarship.


The faculty tuition scholarship is provided by the University of Sydney. All other benefits are provided by the China Scholarship Council.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants:

• must be citizens of the People’s Republic of China, and must not be currently working or studying in Australia at the time of application;
• must not be aged over 35 years at the time of application;
• should have completed a Master’s programme, or one year of PhD study in China, or an equivalent pathway; and should be eligible to enter PhD studies at the University of Sydney without further preparatory study1;
• must meet the University of Sydney’s English language proficiency requirements for admission2, as demonstrated by an IELTS test completed no more than two (2) years prior to lodgement of a student visa application;
• must satisfy the Australian Government’s English language proficiency requirements for a student visa3; and
• should satisfy any additional selection criteria set out by the China Scholarship Council4.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit a complete application for admission to a PhD degree to the University of Sydney (International Office). Applicants must also complete the USYD–CSC Postgraduate Research Scholarship Application Form (at the end of these Guidelines), and submit it to the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International). In addition, applicants must complete a separate scholarship application with the China Scholarship Council.

A. Application to the University of Sydney

1. Read the information about how to apply for a PhD on the University of Sydney website:

2. Make contact with a potential academic supervisor at the University of Sydney, and discuss your research proposal. You can find a potential academic supervisor using the online Research Supervisor Connect tool:

Students applying to the Faculty of Economics and Business should contact the Faculty directly.
3. After you and your supervisor have reached agreement about your research proposal, complete a Postgraduate Research Application Form (for commencement in Semester 2, 2011):

B. Application to the China Scholarship Council

1. Complete a CSC Application Form and the necessary Employer Reference Form(s).
These forms can be obtained from the China Scholarship Council: http://www.csc.edu.cn/
2. Attach a copy of your University of Sydney application (as outlined above) to your CSC application.
3. Submit your complete CSC application, together with the copy of your University of Sydney application,
to the China Scholarship Council. Applications must be received by 20 March 2011.
