PhD fellowship in identification and quantification of complex systems, University of Southern Denmark

Overview

The Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake research on the identification and quantification of complex systems using Raman spectroscopy and multivariate analysis. The systems to be characterized with the spectroscopic methods will include fouling on the membrane from a membrane contactor, and also other complex systems, for example, natural materials, mixtures of products from separation processes.

The PhD fellow will carry out research in the CLEANWASTE project and part of the study will be undertaken in collaboration with a fellow PhD student in the program. The objective is to develop and optimize the membrane separation process for the stripping of ammonia from the liquid fraction of the livestock waste. The PhD student will focus on developing methods for the identification and structure characterization of the membrane fouling with Raman spectroscopy and multivariate analysis algorithm. The findings will contribute to an understanding of the fouling formation mechanism, that will support the design of pre-treatment process for the liquid waste and membrane cleaning methods, which reduce membrane fouling tendency. The developed spectroscopic methods will also be used to analyze other complex systems. The PhD fellow will work in the interdisciplinary research field of chemistry, chemical engineering and environmental engineering.

The PhD fellowship requires an MSc degree on chemistry or chemical engineering. Advanced level of speaking, writing and reading English is required. The applicant should demonstrate research potential as reflected by for instance the grades obtained and the master’s thesis. Previous research experience is considered as additional advantages.

Application, salary, etc.:

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the Fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
