PhD Student in the Noble-Gas Geochemistry of Sediment Porewater

Overview

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is a Swiss-based but internationally active research institute within the ETH domain. Eawag is committed to the ecologically, economically and socially responsible management of water.

The Department of Water Resources and Drinking Water is offering a position as a:

PhD Student in the Noble-Gas Geochemistry of Sediment Porewater
The subject of the doctoral thesis will be “Transport of noble gases and pore fluids in lake sediments”.

Noble gases dissolved in the porewater of lacustrine and oceanic sediments have been shown to exhibit great scientific potential as proxies for (i) the physical and environmental conditions prevailing in the overlying water body and (ii) the physico-chemical processes occurring in the sediment. The aim of this PhD project is to expand this emerging field of research using both laboratory studies and field research. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct basic research on the transport mechanisms of dissolved noble gases in sediment porewaters.

The goals of the project are:

To improve our understanding of how the transport and trapping of noble gases in sediments is controlled by the microscopic structure of the sediment
To study and quantify the diffusion rates of dissolved noble gases and other solutes in sediment porewater
To apply the results of the basic research to environmental case studies in lakes; e.g., by analysing the transport of geogenic fluids in sediments, studying the origin and dynamics of CH4-rich fluids, or reconstructing past physical conditions of the water body

Candidates for this position are expected to hold an MSc degree in environmental sciences, physics, geology or a similar discipline. An advanced knowledge of environmental physics, as well as fluency in English and German, would be an advantage.

The anticipated start of this position is 1 January 2011. The initial duration of the position will be three years, with a possible extension of one additional year. The PhD will be awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH). Women are explicitly encouraged to apply for this position with a view to increasing the proportion of women involved in science and research.

Please submit your application – including CV, motivation letter, copies of academic qualifications and the names and contact information of three references – in electronic form as one single PDF file to Sandra Egler, Human Resources Department (recruiting@eawag.ch), citing reference number 104003. The deadline for applications is 31 October 2010.
