Overview
To provide outstanding American minority scholars and other scholars who are members of a group that is underrepresented in the social sciences the opportunity to spend a year or two conducting research and pursuing extensive training in residence at the National Poverty Center at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy; To expand knowledge in all of the social sciences on a broad range of issues related to poverty and public policy; To encourage interdisciplinary research through course work, independent study and faculty interaction.
Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Fellows will participate in a number of seminars on Poverty Research and will be supervised by Sheldon Danziger, Henry J. Meyer, Distinguished University Professor of Public Policy and Director, National Poverty Center.
Stipends
During the fellowship period, scholars receive stipends of $50,000 per calendar year, beginning as early as July 1, 2011, but no later than September 1, 2011.
Eligible candidates
Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. after 2005 and prior to August 31, 2011. Sponsorship: Fellowships are sponsored by the National Poverty Center and its Research and Training Program on Poverty and Public Policy. Funds for these fellowships are provided primarily by the Ford Foundation. Research Themes: Faculty affiliates of this program are currently engaged in the following types of studies: The Effects of the Recession and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 on Workers and Families; Economic Self-sufficiency and the Well-being of Vulnerable Families and Children; Longitudinal Analyses of Youth Development; Family Formation and Healthy Marriages; Safety, Stability and Healthy Development of Children; Immigration and Poverty; Investing in Low-Income Families: The Accumulation of Financial Assets and Human Capital; Qualitative Research on Barriers to Self-Sufficiency.
Priority will be given to proposals that would benefit from resources available at the University of Michigan and from interactions with faculty members who are affiliated with the NPC. Selection Procedures: Preference will be given to scholars who are engaged in poverty research and who received the Ph.D. after 2005.
Applicants must be American citizens and members of a group that is underrepresented in the social sciences. The research proposal that is a part of each application will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of nationally-recognized poverty researchers.
