Academic Achievement Leadership Award

Overview

The Academic Achievement Leadership Award Program will provide renewable scholarships of up to $22,000 to entering freshmen for the 2011-2012 academic year. The primary purpose of the scholarship program is to attract highly qualified students who demonstrate the potential for leadership and intellectual development and are committed to becoming engaged citizens of the university and the broader community. Scholarship funds will be disbursed on a semester basis and are renewable annually for three additional years provided the student maintains the conditions of the award.

Program Benefits:

Scholarship funds up to the full cost of attendance including tuition, residence hall, meal plan, books, and other educational expenses. Access to a broad range of experiences and activities designed to foster leadership development and personal growth. Access to various support services and other resources to encourage academic excellence and enhance the educational experience. Opportunities for various mentor relationships with university faculty and staff.

Eligibility Requirements:

2011 high school graduate. Minimum GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale. Completed ACT/ SAT exam or have a future test date scheduled. Leadership experience through participation in school or community activities. Recipients must ultimately be accepted for admission to UW-Milwaukee as a new freshman in fall 2011.


Selection Criteria:

Involvement in extra-curricular school or community activities, charitable organizations, and/or other endeavors which indicate a significant leadership record and outstanding leadership potential. Demonstrated academic achievement based on review of high school records. Finalists will be invited to participate in a personal interview. Financial need may also be considered.

Required Application Materials:

 Completed Scholarship Application. Please type or print in black ink.
 Completed application for admission to UWM, including submission of your high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores. (If you have not yet applied for admission, you are encouraged to do so as soon as possible by going to https://apply.wisconsin.edu/.)
 One Letter of Recommendation. Attach a letter from an individual who can endorse your application and comment on your leadership qualities and academic promise. A professional reference is suggested (e.g.: high school principal, guidance director, guidance counselor, teacher, or employer). Note: Your reference letter may not be from an acquaintance or a relative.
 Essay: Submit a type-written response to the essay questions on page 4 of this application. Please limit your essay to no more than four pages in length, double-spaced. Be sure to include your full name on each page of the essay.
 High School Transcript: Please include your high school transcript with your application packet.

Renewability Criteria:

Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Fulfillment of leadership and related program requirements on an annual basis. Completion of 24 or more credits at the end of each academic year. This scholarship is limited to a maximum of four years (total of eight semesters).

Application Deadline:

Candidates are encouraged to apply early due to the competitive nature of these scholarships and the limited number of available awards. The priority deadline for applications is February 15th, 2011. Applications received by this date will be screened and reviewed for eligibility and applicants will be notified of a decision prior to April 30th, 2011.
