Australia: Queensland Injury Prevention Council (QIPC) Masters Scholarship

Overview

The Queensland Injury Prevention Council (QIPC) Masters Scholarship will provide financial support for graduates seeking to undertake coursework Masters study’s in injury prevention and safety promotion.

Applications will be evaluated on the following:

• Academic record
• Previous employment, advocacy, volunteer work, or participation in injury prevention or activities that promote public safety
• Demonstrated interest / commitment to a career in injury prevention
• Referees’ reports

The QIPC five Priority Areas, which also align with the Australian and Queensland Government identified priority’s are:
• A safe childhood with particular focus on the elimination of unintentional injury, water safety and the safe transport of young children.
• A safe youth with particular focus on safe driving, responsible use of alcohol and sensible public conduct.
• A safe old age with particular focus on falls prevention and resilience.
• Safe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a particular focus on responsible use of alcohol and reduction of interpersonal violence.
• Safe Rural and Remote Communities with a particular focus on farm safety, safe driving and safe infrastructure.

Scholarships topics must be relevant to one or more of the QIPC five Priority Areas, and include but not be limited to:

• preventing alcohol related trauma e.g. glassing;
• promoting rural / farm safety, particularly safe off road usage of motorised bikes including all-terrain vehicles for children up to 17 years of age;
• promoting water safety;
• preventing falls in those aged 40 years and over; and
• promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander safety.



2. Selection Criteria

The selection criteria for the submitted application will be:

Criterion and Weighting

Academic record 50%
Relevance of Masters program to injury prevention & priorities 20%
Previous experience in injury prevention / safety promotion in a work, study, advocacy, volunteer or participatory context 10%
Demonstrated commitment to career in injury prevention 10%
Referees’ reports 10%
Total 100%

3. Instructions for Applicants

3.1 Applications must be relevant to the field of injury prevention

3.2 The awarded scholarship will be for one year.

3.3 To qualify, projects must be undertaken within Queensland at an institution approved by the QIPC.

3.4 Masters students are eligible to apply for the scholarship at any point in their studies.

3.5 There is no requirement on the scholars to perform work of any kind for the QIPC as a condition of the scholarship.

3.6 However, there may be occasions where the QIPC may require the scholar to make presentations e.g. to the Council, at conferences etc.


4. Value of stipend

Stipend $ 9,150
Conference travel allowance $ 850

TOTAL $10,000 for one year

5. Eligibility Requirement

The applicant must hold:

a) An undergraduate degree in:

• Health science
• Behavioural / social science
• Psychology
• Nursing
• Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy
• Statistics
• other related discipline with relevant interest / experience in injury related research; or

b) Suitable practical experience in the areas of injury prevention and/or safety promotion.

The research undertaken by a successful applicant must occur within Queensland.
The applicant must be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia. Applicants are to provide evidence of residency status.

The QIPC Masters Scholarship is not intended to support overseas students or interstate students undertaking Masters degree in Queensland, unless they have determined to develop their careers in Queensland. Therefore, applicants from overseas and other states are eligible to apply only on the condition that they can provide proof of their intention to gain permanent residence and nurture a career in Queensland.

6. HOW TO APPLY

Failure to follow these instructions concerning the application form could prejudice the success of your application.

- The application should be fully complete. Do not assume that the person reading it will have access to any other material relevant to your application.

- It is in your interest to be precise and concise in your application. Do not add annexes or other documents to this application except those requested.

- The minimum size typeface to be used is 12 point.

- The original plus four complete copies of (i) the typed application and (ii) certified copies of academic transcripts, should be sent by mail to QIPC. (DO NOT send your application by fax.)

- In addition, an electronic version of (i) the typed application and (ii) certified copies of academic transcripts should be sent by email to qipc@health.qld.gov.au

- The five hard copy applications and the electronic application must all be received by 23 January 2011. Late applications will not be considered.

- Attach certified copies of official academic transcripts and an institutional key to grading system used, at the end of the application.

- The scholarship applicant must arrange for the receipt of TWO referees’ reports to be sent DIRECTLY to the QIPC by the due date of the application.

• The hard copy and electronic applications must be received by midnight 23 January.
