PhD Scholarship in Indigenous Policy - University of Queensland

Overview

Outstanding applicants are encouraged to apply for a new PhD scholarship available from February 2011, to undertake a project into capability theory and Indigenous policy. Stipend $27,222 pa for three years.

Project Details: The PhD project is a component of an ARC-funded Linkage Project into ‘Democratic Dialogue and Capabilities: New Opportunities in Post-Reconciliation Australia’. Chief Investigators on the project are Prof Patrick Dodson (http://ipdru.arts.unsw.edu.au/), A/Prof Sarah Maddison and A/Prof Katharine Gelber. Partner Organisations are the Benevolent Society (http://www.bensoc.org.au/) and Reos Partners (http://www.reospartners.com/). The student will be supervised by A/Prof Katharine Gelber, and the student will be located at the University of Queensland (http://www.uq.edu.au/).

The PhD student will undertake research into the potential application of capability theory to the development of Indigenous policy in Australia. The PhD topic fits within a broader research agenda, namely that of analysing whether a process of democratic dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians can have capability-enhancing effects. The findings from the PhD project are expected to enhance the development of a process of democratic dialogue in the broader project. The successful applicant may occasionally be required to travel to participate in dialogue meetings.


Requirements:

Honours (first or second class), or Masters (Research) in a relevant discipline such as Political Science, Philosophy, Indigenous Studies or Social Policy.
An understanding of Indigenous policy is essential.
