Overview
The Health Journalism Fellowships program includes study tour travel and dialogue that focus on infectious diseases in Asia. Journalists meet with medical and public health specialists both inside and outside of government; community leaders; farmers and businesses; journalists and others to learn how Asian countries are dealing with infectious diseases.
The purposes of this fellowship are:
•To enhance the quality and quantity of media reporting, writing, editing, and broadcasting in health care journalism for the general public and trade publications.
•To develop a strong and vibrant community of journalists concerned with all forms of health care journalism.
•To raise the stature of health care journalism in newsrooms, the industry, and the public, as a whole.
2011 Health Journalism Fellowships
Theme: Reporting on Infectious Diseases in the Asia Pacific Region
The 2011 Health Journalism Fellowships program will include a seven-day study tour in mainland China and another Asian country with a focus on influenza, HIV/AIDS, and other infectious diseases and public health issues. The study tour will be followed by a three-day workshop on reporting infectious diseases and other health issues at the University of Hong Kong Journalism and Media Studies Centre.
Program Dates: 10-day program tentatively scheduled for September 2011. Applications will be announced approximately six months before the program. To receive the announcement, email journalismfellowship@eastwestcenter.org
Study Tour Destinations: Mainland China and another Asian country plus Hong Kong workshops.
Who Can Participate: U.S. and Asian journalists will be selected by application and invitation.
Funding: East-West Center with program support from the University of Hong Kong Journalism and Media Studies Centre. The program covers all air transportation, lodging and program-related ground transportation and meals for participating journalists.
