NESA UGRAD Scholarship at Jordanian Citizen

Overview

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Amman is pleased to announce that it is currently accepting applications for one year full scholarship of full time, non degree study in the Unites States for the first, second and third year undergraduate students, as well as students in their final year of secondary school through the Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Program (NESA UGRAD). Applications are due at the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday February 1 st , 2011.

Background information:

The Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program, NESA UGRAD, is a part of GLOBAL UGRAD, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State. NESA UGRAD will award scholarships to outstanding students from countries of the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia for one-year, undergraduate, nondegree studies programs in the United States at a diverse network of accredited two- and fouryear institutions. Participants will be enrolled full-time and will live on-campus with an American roommate. Participants will not select host institutions. Placements will not be changed. Preference will be given to those in the fields of humanities, social sciences and education although other fields will also be considered.


Scholarships will be awarded for one academic year (Approximately 10 months). It will include academic work as well as a community service component and an unpaid internship related to students field of study. Students will be enrolled full time in undergraduate course work chosen from the host institution’s existing curriculum. Host institutions will offer instructions on topics including academic research and writing, critical thinking, time management, note taking, and studying for and taking tests. Students will live on campus with American peers. They will be required to take an American studies course each semester and will be able to take one or two classes in their specified field of study. Students won’t be able to choose their host institution. They will be placed according to their field of study, skill level and availability. This is a non degree program and it will be the student’ responsibility to check with their university in Jordan regarding the transfer of credits accumulated during the program

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

Community Service: To expose participants to the principles of community service and social responsibility in the United States, NESA UGRAD participants will be required to perform a minimum of 20 hours of community service at local organizations during their first semester.

Part-Time Internship: Internships provide an essential opportunity for participants to gain professional experience and skills that can be applied to their future careers in their home countries. NESA UGRAD participants will be required to intern 8-20 hours per week during their second semester. Each participant’s internship must be related to their field of study. Internships will be unpaid and take place in the local community.

Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates will be considered without respect to race, color, religion, national origin, or gender. Persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Competition for the NESA UGRAD Program is merit-based and open to anyone who:
- Is a Jordanian citizen, national or permanent resident qualified to hold a valid Jordanian
passport.
- Is completing his/her final year of secondary school or enrolled in first-, second-, third*- year full-time undergraduate study at the time of application at a registered Jordanian university or high school and is in good academic standing. Part-time students or correspondence students are not eligible;
- Submits a complete application with all required documents by Tuesday February 1 st
, 2011;
- Is able to begin the academic exchange program in the United States in August 2011;
- Is able to receive and maintain a J-1 visa;
- Is committed to returning to his/her home country after completion of the program;
- A special session of TOEFL (ITP) Exam will be held for shortlisted candidates during the first week of February 2011. Candidates should be proficient in spoken and written English with a minimum TOEFL or TOEFL (ITP) score of 500. TOEFL exam fees must be paid by the applicant; however, successful finalists will be reimbursed for the cost of the TOEFL exam.
- Students living in rural areas are strongly recommended to apply.
* Third-year students must be enrolled in a four-year program at their home university or
institution.
The U.S. Embassy encourages applicants who demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities. Recommended field of study include Social sciences, humanities and education.

The Application form, Translated academic transcript, two letters of reference, a personal statement and TOEFL or TOEFL (ITP) result should be submitted online at
