Overview
The University of Southampton is one of the UK’s top 15 research universities after the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. We are a member of the influential Russell Group – an association of 20 major UK research universities.
The School of Management’s PhD programme has been awarded +3 recognition for full-time students by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and has also received research studentships from ESRC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for its doctoral programme.
We will consider applications to undertake research in any area of:
Accounting, Accountability and Governance, Corporate Social Responsibility, Entrepreneurship, Financial Markets, Health Management, Human Resources, Information Technology/Systems, Innovation, Management Science, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour, Operational Research, Risk, Supply Chain Management, and Strategy.
Particular importance is placed on ensuring adequate supervision for research students. We will carefully examine your proposed area of study in order to ensure that such supervision is readily available.
The School will be offering a small number of PhD Scholarships for full-time entry on 29 September 2011.
One of the scholarships will specifically be awarded for the area of "Quantitative management science/operational research", involving research in green logistics and transport, healthcare, optimization and heuristics. Please apply for a place on our MPhil/PhD programme by following these instructions.
All completed applications, which include all supporting documents, received by 1st April 2011 will be considered for the scholarships.
Entry requirements
The normal minimum entrance requirement is:
- A Masters degree from a UK university or equivalent overseas/professional qualification in an appropriate subject;
- Quality of your research proposal, and
- Support from your prospective supervisor.
The supporting documents are: a research proposal, two academic references, certified copies of degree certificates and transcripts and an English language certificate (if appropriate). The criteria for the Scholarship are: Academic excellence Research potential (a well written research proposal will support this)
Application procedure
In addition to the normal application procedure you should also submit a brief outline of your general area of research interest and proposed topic of research, if known (1000 words max).
Important Note. Applicants wishing to be considered for a School Scholarships will need to submit a FULL research proposal.
