Europe: Joint Erasmus Mundus Master Programme for “Nanoscience and nanotechnology”

Four leading research and educational institutions in Europe propose a joint Erasmus Mundus Master Course entitled “Nanoscience and nanotechnology”. The programme offered is a truly integrated program, with a strong research backbone and a very important international outreach. The objective of this course is to provide top quality multidisciplinary education in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The participating partners are:

• Chalmers Tekniska Högskola (Chalmers), Sweden
• Université Joseph Fourier Grenoble, France
• Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), Germany
• Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven),Belgium

The fast evolution of the field requires a strong consortium with noted educational experience in the field. The partners offer this experience. In addition, all the lectures offered by the consortium are embedded within various research centres (e.g. IMEC in Leuven, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Grenoble, Max Planck Institute in Dresden, MC2 centre in Chalmers). This strong link between education and research is a guarantee for keeping the education relevant and state of the art.

The master programme has a duration of two years (120 ECTS points). Erasmus Mundus students follow courses at K.U. Leuven and another university of the consortium. Courses are taught in English.

What is nanoscience and nanotechnology?

The way molecules and atoms assemble on the nanoscale into larger structures determines important material properties such as the electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Of course, it has long been recognized that nature performs this assembly very well in the creation of the sophisticated molecular machinery that supports our life on earth. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are the science and technology that target human control over these nanoscale processes. This new direction of science is interdisciplinary, involving physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and materials science, among other fields.

Why study Nanoscience and Nanotechnology?

Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is a newborn discipline, that demands a multi-disciplinary scientific education. The Master programme teaches the basics of physics, biology and chemistry at the nanometer scale, and supplements this with courses on technology and engineering to promote an understanding of practical applications. This educational programme will produce the scientists and engineers for the booming economy of nanosciences.

Admission Criteria

•Admitted are top-level Bachelor students in Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Electrical Engineering or Material Science, with a proven background in mathematics and physics or chemistry.
•A minimum of 180 credits and a GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 75% of the scale maximum is required.
•The admission policy is intended to ensure equal opportunity of access to higher education for qualified European and third country students.
•Students should prove a good command of English, both spoken and written. All non-native speakers are required to submit an English proficiency test e.g. TOEFL (minimum score of 580 pbt or 237 cbt) or IELTS (minimum overall band score of 6.5-7.0). These tests are not required if students can prove that some of their previous studies were successfully completed in English.

Selection Criteria

The academic selection is carried out by the EMM Nano Executive Board of the consortium The selection criteria are the applicants background and previous education, the applicants excellence based on the obtained GPA, the English language skills and the completeness of the application file.

Application Procedure

•Applications for the Erasmus Mundus Master are open on December 1, 2009.
•Application deadline is:

◦January 1, 2010 for non-EEA citizens
◦June 1, 2010 for EEA citizens.

◦Please note that the number of applications by third country students must be limited to three Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses maximum. In the eventual case that a student applies to more than three EM Courses he/she will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.

•Application fee
◦All non-EEA applicants will have to pay an application fee of 50 EUR to process their file. This fee needs to be paid for each application made. This fee will be reimbursed upon registration at K.U.Leuven. Please submit proof of payment with your application. Payment can only be made via bank transfer. No other form of payment will be accepted.
Application instructions

Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year start in December 2009. Starting from December 1, 2009 a new version of the online application form will be available, so kindly check our website by then for the correct link. For instructions in the mean time please click here http://www.kuleuven.be/admissions/transitional_instructions.html

Required documents:
(Please note that applications received by us without these documents will not be processed):

1. A passport photograph.

2. A certified copy of your diplomas and transcripts of academic records.

All documents should be certified as true and original by either the educational institution that issued them (in a sealed institution envelope) or by the local Belgian diplomatic office. Photocopies and faxes are not accepted.

Please add a document explaining the grading system of your country (i.e. comparing the grades to numeric score). If you are still preparing for an examination at the time of application, you are requested to forward – as soon as the results are available – a certificate attesting to the results.

3. Translation of your diploma and official transcripts

If your documents are not in English, French or Dutch, please arrange for these documents to be translated by a registered translator. These documents must be also certified by the educational institution that issued them or by a Belgian diplomatic office.

4. English proficiency test

All non-native English applicants must submit a certificate proving their proficiency in English: for example, a TOEFL certificate sent by ETS, an IELTS certificate sent by The British Council. Only original score cards sent directly by either ETS or The British Council are accepted. We require an IELTS minimum overall band score of 6,5 or alternatively an minimum TOEFL score of 580 (paper based test), 237 (computer based test) or 92 (internet based test).

ETS: please use university code 0749, department code 99

IELTS: please request for the score card to be sent to the International Office, Unit for International Admissions, Exchange and Scholarships, Atrechtcollege, Naamsestraat 63, 3000 Leuven, Belgium
