Europe: Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for AtoSiM Master of Science 2010 - 2011

Overview

AtoSim is a one year Physics or Chemistry Masters degree focused on computer modelling of physical, chemical and biomolecular systems.

This one-year degree provides a high-level qualification in the rapidly expanding field of computer modeling in physical, chemical and bio-molecular sciences. This highly integrated Course covers a full range of techniques: from quantum mechanical atomistic descriptions to coarse-grained mesoscopic models. Particular fields of application include condensed matter and statistical physics, chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science and theoretical bio-molecular science.

The study program is divided into three parts. During the first semester, the students are enrolled in a specialized curriculum in one of the three partner institutions. The Course includes selected modules in physics, chemistry and computer science. Next, they participate in a compulsory "winter school" for a fortnight, organized by the University of Amsterdam. In the second semester they will carry out a research project in a second partner institution. The research project and the first semester courses involve mobility between two different institutions.

Students obtain a double degree from the two institutions in which they are enrolled. Admission into the master degree is decided on the basis of academic excellence by a selection committee composed of representatives from each partner institution. Applicants should have at least four years of prior studies majoring in physics, chemistry, engineering, applied mathematics or bio-informatics. Proof of English proficiency is also required.

AtoSim is operated jointly by:

• University of Amsterdam, THE NETHERLANDS
• Ecole normale supérieure in Lyon, FRANCE
• University la Sapienza in Rome, ITALY.

Students will obtain a double diploma from the institutions in which they are enrolled for their first semester and for their research project.

These diplomas are:

•For ENS-Lyon:

Master de Sciences de la Matière (within the track "Modélisation")

•For the University of Amsterdam:

Master of Science in Chemistry

or

Master of Science in Physics (within the track "Condensed Matter Science")

•For the University of La Sapienza:

Master in Physics

These degrees are recognized in Europe as research masters degree allowing the student to start a Ph. D. thesis. The courses offered in the three partner institutions are based on a two years (120 ECTS) Masters degree in Physics (Rome) or Sciences de la Matière (Lyon) or Physics or Chemistry (Amsterdam).

Grants / Stipends

The European Commission will finance 15 Erasmus Mundus stipends for applicants coming from any third country. Additional funds coming from the Community's external relations budget allow paying for Erasmus Mundus scholarships to additional students coming from specific countries.

The European Commission also imposes the following additional selection criteria, which aims at ensuring a geographical balance across the sponsored third-country students:

• no more than 25% of the selected third-country students should come from the same country
• no more than 10% of the selected third-country students should come from the same institution.

Eligible candidate

AtoSim welcomes applications from both EU and non-EU students with:

• an excellent university record
• at least 4 years of prior studies.
• major in one of the following fields: Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Applied Maths, Bioinformatics.

Applicants should have an excellent University record, with at least 4 years of prior studies corresponding to 240 ECTS, with major in one of the following fields: physics, chemistry, engineering, applied mathematics, bioinformatics. Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 570 or IELTS 6.5 or equivalent) IS REQUIRED. As students from non EEA countries may not be able to provide an ECTS characterization of their previous studies, their applications will be will be ranked according to the following criteria :

• academic results of the student within his/her class (typical requirement: Grade Point Average) of at least 75% of the scale maximum)
• adequation of the student's background with the field of the Masters course
•l etter of motivation of the student
• recommendation from recognized scientists
• quality or ranking of the institution in which the student obtained his bachelor (or equivalent) degree
• level and quality of the post-bachelor courses already taken by the student
• level of English knowledge

Each academic year, after closing the deadline for the applications, the steering committee will hold a meeting for evaluation of the students' proposals and selection of the successful candidates. In general the Consortium is assessing students individually on the basis of their previous academic record. For non-EEA students a limited number of Erasmus Mundus grants will be provided by the European Commission. The selection list for granted students will be submitted to the European Commission. The ENS-Lyon will inform the students as soon as the list is approved (likely by the end of May).

Admitted students will normally be accepted for one of the mobility schemes mentioned in their three preferred choices. Changes in the mobility scheme should be approved by the steering committee.
