Overview
VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a training programme in Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 70 scholarships to training participants.
Programme content
The objective of STIMULATE 10 is to provide a scientific and technological information management training programme for academic professionals working in universities and libraries. The primary aim of the course is to guide the participants in retrieving information that is publicly accessible at international level.
The second aim is to teach them to organise and manage their institutional, regional or national information resources. After an introductory course on computer applications, there is a swift reorientation towards the more practical side of the programme. This involves technical and practical training on networks and internet use, and database development.
STIMULATE 10 aims to create an environment in which each participant is stimulated to become actively involved, with the support of the lecturers and the infrastructure provided by the training programme. This fits in well with the general worldwide shift from teaching to learning management. The goal is to organise interactive seminars where experts stimulate individual work on case studies. The participants then present the outcome of these studies to their fellow participants, which is a good basis for group discussions and further contributions and comments by the expert. These discussions also give attention to several cultural, sociological and political aspects of information and communication technology. STIMULATE 10 provides a full range of facilities to strengthen this method of teaching and learning, such as PC rooms with internet access, libraries and scheduled study visits to information centres.
