Overview
The Tata Africa Scholarships have been in existence since 2006 and have grown from strength
to strength over the years. This year, a total of 40 scholarships have been made available to students across South Africa. Tata Africa Scholarship Awards are awarded for post-graduate studies at Masters or Doctoral level, in the following areas:
• Build Environment;
• Computer/Information Sciences;
• Engineering;
• Mathematics/Statistics;
• Financial Management;
• Life Sciences; and
• Natural Sciences
Each scholarship is valued at R50 000 to be used towards the student’s tuition fees, books,
accommodation and living costs.
Selection Criteria
Consideration will be given to students who are financially challenged and have a proven academic track record during their graduate years.
Application Forms must personally be complete by the student. The criteria and information required is set out in the application form. Process going forward:
Applications to be received by 5 November 2009. Students and universities will be advised by 12 November 2009. Students and Heads of Faculty / Deans need to make themselves available for the handover ceremony in November.
Value of scholarships
Tata Africa will pay over the scholarship fees to the academic institution - who in turn will administer the payment to the student.
A letter of Intent and Candidate statement
The letter must indicate a desire to be considered for the award.
Each applicant must submit a statement about his/her qualifications for the scholarship.
The following information should be included :-
1. Quality and feasibility of the proposed plan of study or research and proposed time schedule.
2. A demonstrable need for the specialised knowledge and skills that he/she plans to acquire.
3. Academic and professional qualifications, including research publication record.
A full Curriculum Vitae
The candidate’s CV should provide a complete listing of personal and professional data.
Letters of Reference
Candidates must request letters of reference from three persons who can discuss professional competence and other personal or professional qualities or interests that make the applicant especially qualified to receive a Scholarship.
Each letter of reference should contain the following points:
o The candidate’s relationship to the referee,
o The technical accomplishments and relative standing of the candidate among his/her peers,
o Contact details of the referee.
Application Deadline
Applications should reach the administrative offices of the Tata Scholarships by
30 October 2009. No late entries will be accommodated. Electronic copies should
